First Sun Conure rescued, help?

I've always had cockatiels and budgies, but it looks I may be adopting a sun conure that was rescued from the streets.

My friend notified me that as she was driving home from work, there was a bird cage in the street that had a sun conure in it that presumably fell out of someone's car. We've been trying to find the owner of this bird but nobody has come forward yet to claim it as theirs. She can't keep the bird and has considered giving him to me as I already have a setup for large birds.

My experience with these birds has been positive, they've been very affectionate and while this conure was shaken up at first, he seemed to warm up fairly quickly. I've heard horror stories of how loud their voices are, but what do you think of sun conures?

Mine is loud when she wants to be but she only squawks a couple times a day. I am not bothered by it at all, nor is my husband. I may be just lucky to have a quiet girl though.

I personally believe the screaming is based on environment and "training". My three only get loud a couple times a day. I ignore it, let them communicate and it doesn't last but a minute. Otherwise they just chatter.

My cockatiel gets very loud when I get home from work, but thats about it lol. So you think a Sun Conure with proper attention wouldn't drive other people crazy?

Mango is only loud when I leave in the morning/come home at night and anytime someone is out in front of the house. She might scream a few times during the day for my wife who works from home but not too bad. I have a loud house in general though dogs x2 kids x2 Fids x 2 and 1 really old cat that is a mime meower.

I think a well socialized sun with the proper boundaries in place will be just fine. However, this is a rescue and they can have issues and drive you up a wall before they settle down and learn what you want them to learn.

Also, some suns are more vocal than others. Even a vocal sun who is not screaming can be considered loud and annoying. My sun is loud when I get home or start to wake up or walk in the room and he wants out. He doesn't scream but calls to me. And well a calling sun is fairly loud;) The only time my sun screams is when he wants to go to bed and I ignored or wasn't paying attention when he asked nicely the first time.

That's really what I'm nervous about, as I always hear horror stories of sun conures being very, very loud, louder than dogs and as loud as a cockatoo lol. My cockatiel and budgie get loud when they're excited, but it's usually towards bed time and simply putting a blanket over them they will quiet down.

I'm pretty sure this conure was owned by someone, as it was found in a big cage with decorations and stuff in the middle of the road. I'm still going to try to find the owner, but as of right now they want me to have the bird.

Thats so sad. I hope you do find his owners. I would be devastated. But I also can't figure out how in the world you LOSE a large bird cage in the middle of the road with the bird IN IT!

Odd.

Yeah it does seem kind of strange, you would think the driver would AT LEAST see or hear the cage falling out of the car. While I am "keeping" him, I haven't given up on finding the original owner either. Problem is the bird has attracted a lot of negative attention where random people just wants him cause he's bright and colorful.

I also had another theory on where it came from. Not far from the location where the bird was found is a flea market and there's a truck that comes every now and then with birds on it to be sold there. The parrots and chickens there aren't well taken care of, so if that's the case, this bird might have hopefully caught a break.

I bet you are right. I hope thats the case. Because if so then a very sad owner missing the sweet baby is highly unlikely AND it is in a better place!

Is it banded? I guess you are lucky that the cage came with it. It can be a distinguishing factor in finding the right owner if indeed it is missing from someone who cares, and also, because, well, cages are expensive.

Would you recognize the driver of the truck if they came around?

Even though the flea market thing is a theory and I have seen them selling sun conures, the cage itself looks a little too customized for being a flea market bird. I really want to find the original home as I would be devastated if I lost my cockatiel or budgie traveling.

The problem I'm faced with now is that when I started advertising a found sun conure, it's attracted a lot of weirdos who just want the bird to resell or just want him. So I started asking people who claim it's their bird if they can describe the cage in detail he was lost with.

I hope you can find the owners or give the guy a chance! Every bird is different and out of all the birds sharing a home with us, the budgie is the most annoying for sound... he just goes on and on... The sun does not scream nonstop, he usually has a request or point to make and thats it. They are really great birds, hard not to love their personalities. We also have a cockatoo who in my opinion is the quietest in the house, so go figure for what this little guy may turn out to be for vocal! And even as a rescue, you can still train him, they are extremely intelligent and I am sure he will quickly learn what to do to get his way with you and if you don't respond to loud vocals, he'll learn to try something else :)

Our cockatoo was a rehome and with the worry of her being loud, she quickly learned that saying hello was the best way to get our attention or she does a kissing sound we make to her, but she hardly ever makes a loud vocal call, only time we really hear anything is when all of us are out of the house and she hears the front door, then she calls out to remind us she needs to be released from her prison :) But soon as we get into her line of vision she goes to saying hello or making the kissing sound.

Good luck with him!!!

That's actually an encouraging story with your birds so thank you xD, the parrot is currently staying with my friend's mom who works at a veterinary clinic. She says the bird is "not aggressive, just scared, and loud" lol. Then again, I'd be loud too if I fell off a truck.

Today I will be visiting the conure, although a lot of people did want this bird, they're choosing me because I work with exotics a lot haha.
