Laid an egg

My nephew has a conure that we always thought was a he for some reason. But he's now laid an egg for the first time at the age of 18. My nephew's going to take him to the vet to make sure he's OK, but the vet's closed til Monday due to wintry conditions.

So my question is, how serious a problem can this be for an older bird? (Sorry I don't know the exact species). And for my own curiosity, what would cause a bird to suddenly lay an egg at that age?

Hens can lay an egg for any reason! As long as she is healthy, laying an egg is not harmful for her! Especially if she's in good shape, thus reducing the chances of being egg-bound, and she doesn't decide to lay too many eggs or if the eggs are too large.

I know someone who had a conure that didn't decide to lay an egg until she was 21 years old! I have a 20 year old conure and knock on wood, he hasn't laid any eggs! :D I've been telling myself for over 7 years now that I need to get him DNA sexed!
