Hello,
I recently got my untamed peach fronted conure Piper and am in need of advice. I am trying to get Piper to be social and am not sure i am on the right track. I have tried hand feeding but piper is uninterested in treats. I have tried to get him to step up but he instead flys out of his cage and will only let me pick him up when he flys into a bad spot. I am afraid this does more harm than good.

Any treat advice, steps of training, or other advice would be much appreciated!

Thanks

I think a good first step would be to get his wings clipped. It would probably make him be friendlier, and then you would be able to work with him more. My Hotrod was pretty friendly when I got him, but I was able to work on teaching him stuff more successfully after his wings were clipped. (For example, I am working on taeching him to let me know when he has to go doo-doo. Whenever I see him go, I say doo-doo, and sometimes I hold him over newspaper and tell him doo-doo and he goes. So he now recognizes the word, yay!) I have, however, heard of other people clipping their parrot's wings, and them being more tame just simply from clipping their wings. I think because at that point, they feel more dependant on YOU to provide and take care of them because they can no longer fly. So therefore they trust you more. It's worth a try! :)

Clipping their wings removes the choice for them to fly away, thus forcing them to be with you. Not exactly 'trust building', but I digress.

dirtbikinginger, have you tried finding out what your new conures favorite treats are? Have you observed the first 3 items he eats out of his dish? If you remove the first 3 items that Piper eats out of his diet, you can then use these items as training treats. Best times to train are often before breakfast (i.e. before he has had a chance to eat) and before dinner.

Have you looked into Positive Reinforcement Training or Clicker Training?

I would rather clip his wings once he trusts me to do so.

I have observed that piper loves sunflower seeds so i just bought yogurt covered ones but havnt had the chance to try them yet. I do need to look into these training techniques. ill have to stop at Barnes and Nobles today!

Piper isnt aggressive at all so I know i can train him, just finding a treat he wants has been difficult.
