Still interested...

Well, here we go again. I'm still very, very interested in the Patagonian conure. They're gorgeous, and have an awesome temperament. I have read up a lot, and I understand the huge commitment it takes to own one of them (tons of destructible toys, lots of love). I can't find a lot of information on Patagonians, due to how rare they are in the US compared to other species. I know that I can find awesome cages for dirt cheap, like the one my 'tiels have; that expense is pretty much taken care of. I would love SO much to keep one of these sweet babies, and there is an ad for one where I live. I am so tempted to jump on it!

I'm just wondering if anyone can provide the basic care information, important things to note about them, and some tips. Advice is much appreciated.

Hey there, are you sure you want to do this? In your last thread you had requirments that you wanted met because of your lifestyle etc which I thought was the right way of going about choosing a bird. This species goes against every requirement you mentioned! They are very noisy and experts say that you shouldnt keep them in urban areas. They are also the largest of the Conure family and demand attention. Please dont think Im having a go at you, Im just trying to help.

Ah decisions, decisions can really wear us down. I know I have made enough of them lately. I think if you are facing a tough decision to write things down, the good and the bad. Then in 24 hrs. look at your list again. good luck to PQ and we will support you either way.

I agree with SB, good idea...write it all down. The amount of times that I have walked into a petshop or seen a parrot that I think is stunning has been stax. Waiting 24hrs and reviewing is always a good way to approach it. Good luck!

I would take more time to think this decision over. I think you gave a number of good reasons not to take on the responsibility of owning another parrot. You should also take into consideration how owning another parrot will effect the lives of Pineapple and Sunshine. Instead of dividing your limited amount of time between two parrots, it will have to be divided among three parrots. I think it is better to own one or two parrots and take excellent care of those bird(s), rather than owning three and risk neglecting the attention companion parrots need to lead healthy and happy lives in captivity. If you want another bird I would suggest a less "hands on" bird such as a canary or expanding the number and type of finches you own. I just encourage you to think this decision over very carefully.

We had a pattie when I was growing up. She was a gorgeous bird, and very active. She was a one person bird, and she took a couple good pieces out of me before we learned to coexist (read: I learned how to act around her).

Thank you everyone, for all the great help. Believe me, I've looked that list over a million and one times and asked myself 'is there something in my schdule I can get around?" and "Wow, my time really is that limited?". Mom went over my schedule with me, talked to me about upcoming phases in life that would complicate things for birdie and I. I've been going back and forth about this, and now I think the best solution is to stick with the birds I already have and just wait for a better time. I am very very happy with my little clowns that I have. But I know for a fact, I'm getting another bird someday. Thank you everyone, it's been so nice talking to other bird geeks who understand and are ready to help. You guys are like best friends to me now.

PQ, I salute you for being a wise guardian. It isnt easy, I walked into a petshop and saw a Timneh that was in desperate need of help, it broke me heart. Luckily I didnt take her as Hugo got sick shortly afterwards - guess everything happens for a reason. I will also get another bird one day...I think so many people get parrots then realise that they dont have enough time and then resent the bird - not that you would ever do that, your tiels are very lucky they have you.
