Meet Cookie....

Hi all after much searching ive came to the conclusion Cookie is either a peach or orange fronted conure!
She was picked up this weekend after her former owner (an elderly lady) could no longer keep her due to moving into accomodation.
Cookie was just a little young bird when the lady bought her..and is now around 25 years old...

so without further ado..Heres Cookie!




now i know nothing over these birds..but one things for sure she needs a bigger cage than she has! (think its for budgies this one??) shes been in it all her life, so how do i go about getting her used to a bigger one? do i just put her in or is that too scary for her?

A new cage takes time to adjust to, but she would probably like a bigger place.

A slow transition is best. Get and set up the new cage next to her old one. Let her get used to seeing it and let her explore it when she is out of her cage. Place some of her toys in the new cage, then put her in the new cage.

I'm sure she'll do fine with a new cage just try to give her a little time (maybe a week for the whole process) to adjust to the idea.

She may like the extra space, but she may also be attached to her old home. If practical it might be nice to keep the old cage around - perhaps in another room. She could have the big cage in her 'night time' room and the old cage in a living room or active area of the house.

Also it might be good to check out discussions here about diet. Do you know what cookie has been eating? What are you now feeding her?

She looks like shes in the middle of a molt - she'll recover her pretty plumage quicker and easier with a good diet. Poor diets can make a bird look like they're in a perpetual molt.

yes i always try and get a list of what the animals here have been eating prior to coming in, in Cookies case it was not such a good diet i think, the lady said herself, Cookie is spoilt and eats from the table, so basically whatever her 'owners' were eating on that day
she also scoffs cookie after cookie hence her name.
i was given a bag of basic 'parrot' food. seem to be a mix of sunflower seed, millet and soe sort of ball things. but cookie wont eat it. she's been with us since sunday and ive got her to eat some fruit but thats it. we've had to lock her up at our meal times because she trys to snatch food. my first impressions of her are she is a very naughty cheeky little thing. very destructive. first night out here and she went bezerk ripping up things and tearing things apart. but i think its because she had no toys in her tiny cage.
we've since gave her some from our other birds and she seems a little happier, but im not going to see about her diet!

I find it odd that the general public thinks that all birds that aren't obvious raptors, eat what the same thing...seeds, because that's what the sparrows in their back yard eat. People I talk to about our parrots are shocked that we don't feed them seed.

It going to take time and patience, introducing her to the new environment, new people, and new food.

I had so much fun watching my birds' plumage change from torn, dirty, and unhealthy to soft, organized, and healthy plumage. You'll enjoy watching the progress too.
