Hello all,
I am a new owner of a 4 month old sun conure. This is the first time that I own a bird that I have invested my time and money into. So with this said I have scheduled a visit to the vet this Thursday. I am not sure of the best way to get the bird there or how to get him/her into a carrier without too much stress on the bird. Any suggestions? Any other things I should know or look into with the visit?

Hi there,

I would buy one of those open top plastic carriers they sell at Petco or Petsmart. Pros: it is easy to get the bird in, it has a perch and cheap. Cons: is it's a little small so that their tail drags at the bottom a bit. You also have to make sure you fasten the locking clips well. See pic below:

You can also invest in quality carriers but I find the plastic ones, for vet purposes only, does the job well. Whatever you choose, introduce it to your bird slowly. Maybe lure him in with his fave treats. Put some soft padding in the bottom like a towel.

I also wanted to add, prior to the visit, write down everything you want to ask the vet. Sometimes when you are there, you might feel rushed or distracted to ask him the important stuff. Take advantage of the things you've always wanted to know!

My bird has a similar carrier, and it has a spot to put the seat belt through. (I take my bird around a lot and i like not worrying about the carrier sliding on the seat.) Just something else to keep in mind.
