hello everyone! so I hear the sun conures can be really loud. one of the loudest. I was wanting to ask people that own them how they feel! I live in a Apartment so...i really want and AG but i looking at all the choices! THANKS!

Yes, Sun conures and the entire Aratinga family of conures are very noisy. They can screech very loudly when excited. Although if you're still interested in conures, the Pyrrhura family (like the green-cheeked conure for example) are significantly quieter.

Greys are somewhat quiet, if you keep them stimulated enough. They require a lot of toys, especially shreddable ones. And of course, lots of love and attention.

Hi there.....
We live in an apartment as well, been here, happily for just over 3 years.
Mishka my AG is 2 1/2 years old.
Mishka has loads of toys, to keep her occupied and stimulated. She has won the hearts of the tenant, who live close by. When on the balcony, she has a large audience (which she loves) LoL
When I am outside, hanging washing etc, I can hear Mishka talking and playing. She has her moments of course. I reckon no different than a baby, on a bad day.
Mishka in general in not a loud bird, loves talking and whistling. Her whistling can become a bit loud, but thank goodness, she whistles beautifully and in tune.
Not familiar with the sun conures, how loud they are etc
Sun Conures guardians will be able to assist you, pertaining to their loudness etc.

As PQ mentioned genus Arratinga conures are LOUD.

Imagine the loudest thing you can possibly imagine, then double it and you have an average Arratinga conure. Sun conures are the loudest of the Arratingas.

Don't get me wrong, I LOVE conures, they are the greatest parrots in my humble and biased opinion - but if noise is a concern then they are not for you.

I suspect a large portion of parrots that are rehomed are Arratinga conures for which the owner could not handle the noise anymore.

Of course you will find some quite conures. I've even encountered a sun conure who hardly ever made a peep - but this is the exception to the rule.

Grey's are much more talkative and need a lot of attention and stimulation, but they will not scream nearly as often, and if/when they do it is neither as loud nor as shrill as a conure.

I'll second PQ's recommendation to check out green-cheek conures. They are much quieter. They are very small, but don't let that fool you, they think they're the biggest birds on the planet. They can learn to talk a bit and are very social/playful.

I think the key is that even quiet birds can be loud at times. I bought my Meyers specifically because they are fairly quiet. Even so, he occasionally makes enough noise that I worry my neighbors will get annoyed. Luckily he doesn't even approach the noise my lovebirds made. I adopted them before I really knew much about parrots and unfortunately had to rehome them (they now live in an aviary with other lovebirds). That is a mistake I don't intend to make again. Sometimes I see a bird for adoption on craigslist for a reasonable price and my heart says what a beautiful bird to add to your flock! But I know that we can't risk the extra noise, let alone dedicate enough time to keep two birds happy.

I'm the proud parent of a 9 month old sun conure. She can be very loud at times, but when she is playing or preoccupied with something she can also be very quiet. When I leave her sight she will call to me to find out where I am. For some reason when I turn on the kitchen sink, occasionally she will make a machine gun sound; It's actually quite hilarious! She does chirp loudly when she's very excited and can't get to me, but will usually quiet down if I talk to her. She can repeat some words like "What's that?!" and will use those more than her screeching sounds. She is very quiet at nighttime and in the morning. Sun conures can be loud, but they are also great birds. Give them lots of love and attention and they will return the favor!

Mai Tai is 8 years old, sun conure and very rarely makes a peep. He loves to cuddle, and will make little noises when we cuddle, I have heard him be loud once and I had just got home from be gone all day, generally they are not alone more than an hour or two so he was very excited. My AG Ozzy is actually louder than my Sun conure

I understand the Sun and Jenday Conure allure; they are very beautiful birds and affectionate. Noise is relative to the person hearing it. I think all parrots can be loud at times, but some louder than others. If noise is a problem for you, you should definitely go somewhere where they have a Sun Conure and see if the volume bothers you.

I, on the other hand, have a Jardine and a GCC. Though much smaller in size the GCC is louder than the Jardine, but not intollerably so--and she is supposed to be the "quieter" species of Conure.

My two Sun Conures are an exception becuase they are very quiet. I decided to get them (after much debate as seen in my earlier posts) because after weeks of observing them in the pet store, I decide to take a chance that they would be quiet and they are.

Someone once mentioned that environment has something to do with it. If they are in noisey environment, then chance are they may be noisey. I do notice they my be more prone to screach when my three-year old son is shouting and jumping around.

I guess took home my African Grey and he's quiet too until he's scream and then he'll give a loud squawk which is probably as loud as my Conure screaches but it's rare.

It's really hard to say how they'll behave. I think the best you can do is visit the store several time and observe their demeanor -but nothing's guaranteed.

If you go with a African Grey, consider the amount of space they will require. My wife says our apartment is like a zoo.

PS: From what I've heard, Conures are loud but nothing compared to McCaws or Cockatoos. I guess size does matter.

I agree with you, a noisy environment can contribute to a noisy bird.
When something is loud eg; the tv, my twin nephews visiting, Mishka becomes much louder than usual.

You have to hear the vocalization to understand, some people don't mind it--others can't stand it. Try to go somewhere where you can hear the Sun Conure at close range to see how you thing you'll do with it. There are a lot of Sun Conures in rescues because people can't take the noise. That having been said, if a bird is taught independent play and has a big enough cage and things to do they will be less noisy. My birds mostly sound off in the morning and when they are excited. My Green Cheek Conure (which has the reputation for being in the quietest conure species is louder than my Jardine and sounds off more frequently) Parrots, like other pets, all have their own personalities--some individuals are noisier than others.
