Ducati had his first vet visit today since I've had him. Luckily the vet I take the dogs to is very good (the girls love him, granted he loads them up with treats but it works lol) and he also sees birds. One of the receptionists told me she has a macaw and she takes him there. Dr. Chmelka is amazing!

Ducati wouldn't go in the pet carrier so I had to use the little old cage I got with him. It had been sitting outside at his old place and the weather had gotten to it a bit which was why I didn't want to use it but it was the only thing he would go in. I was so paranoid about him chewing at the bars that I had to make him stop everytime I caught him.

Everybody who came in had to come over and tell me what a pretty bird he is and ask if he could talk to which I replied with, "he screams" lol. He was dancing a little bit in the lobby and more in the room while we waited for the Doc. Then he made the Doc chase him around the room before he could examine him. Dr. C gave me all kinds of information on what to look for and how to tell if he seems sick by checking his breast muscles. Everything was clear and Ducati has a clean bill of health. Then he took him to trim his beak and nails. He's even more pretty now!

Brought him back and tried to weigh him which proved a little trying since he wanted to play ring-around-mom-and-the-vet-tech's-head. He weighs 3 oz and that was only taken by weighing the cage then him in the cage.

After all that, the vet tech comes back and tells me that since Ducati is my first bird and I'm a good client of his, he wasn't going to charge me for the beak and nail trim which is usually $55.

Finally got home and I gave him is dinner with some seeds in it since he was a good little bird minus the flying and pooping on the vet tech's head. He's had his fill and is now glaring at me from the corner of his cage grinding his beak at me. Won't even come to me for a sunflower seed. Clearly, really not happy with mom for taking him to the vet.

Sorry for the long post but it was an interesting couple of hours lol.

Awww! I'm glad Ducati's first vet visit went so well. I hope he forgives you soon.

hahahaha! That's hilarious! Awesome first vet visit. Avery definitely held a grudge against me for about 3 days after her first vet visit, they're so funny that way. You try and look after their health and they give you the stink-eye for it

Thanks! It was definitely an experience. Hopefully he turns out to be as good of an avian vet as he is with the dogs.

Thanks for sharing this story! KissKiss has what I believe will be her first ever vet visit coming up soon (she's approx. 1 and a half). I'm not so sure how that will go either, but I'll share the story here also.

Brilliant story! I took Jellybean to the Vet the week before last - his first health check - since we live in Ireland there are not many exotic pet vets, so the nearest one was about a 2 hour drive! I loaded The Bean in his cage and we set of for Dublin.... he was so good.. the vet was amazing.. she listened to his heart, checked his feathers, his nose and beak.. JellyBean was so good.. Then she did a blood test.. asked me to leave so that JellyBean didn't associate me with the bad experience.. when I came back he flew to my shoulder and would not go near the vet or her team... I made such a fuss of him! He has a clean bill of health... and fell asleep on the way home in the car... was precious to see him all tucked up on his wing!

Please do! First vet visit stories are always fun to read.

Sounds like a nice vet! I'm not sure if Dr. C checked his heart, he may have when he took Duci in the back. I could hear his little "leave me alone" squeaks from the back. Felt so bad for him. Good news is he didn't seem to be as mad at me this morning. He at least came and got some treats from me, and screamed at me while I ran around cleaning after the dog and getting ready for work like he usually does. I don't think he's used to having his nails clipped. He was kinda slipping a little bit moving to different perches last night.

I love that you call him The Bean. Too cute!
