Green Cheek Pineapple Conure - Rico
Although I have only had my little Rico for about 2 weeks now he loves me like I have had him forever. He had no need for adjustment time when I brought him home, right out of the box and into my arms. This is all amazing to me for him being a bird from Petco. The lady who took care of the birds at my local store was amazing with them! From the very first day he ate from my hand and talked to me, he even snuggled! I am very much so a night person so I thought it was a good idea to let him sleep on me while I stay up late at night. When it is time for him to go to bed I will lay down and offer him his favorite blanket, he will gladly crawl into it and snuggle right in, usually sleeping on my chest. He gladly sleeps curled up in that blanket with me all night long, while I watch tv and play around on here. Every once in a while he will peek out from the covers to see if I'm still there and right back to sleep he goes. I'll usually put him in his cage around 7 am so I can go to bed. He is just so trusting of me.:rainbow1:

Do you guys do special heart-warming things like this with your bird buddies?

I am so luck to have this 5 month old conure. He is truly a gift.:41:

Please don't sleep with your bird. I know you love him, and that's why you shouldn't. Birds are too fragile and people kill them by accident all the time by sleeping with them. Wouldn't you feel awful if you woke up after your sleep and you'd crushed him?

I don't sleep when he is in my bed. I can see how you mixed that up. I stay up until 7 am every day, I'm a night person. So while I am watching tv and playing around on here I let him sleep wrapped in a blanket. I definitely don't sleep while he is out. Sorry about the confusion.

While I'm happy you are bonding with Rico and everything is going so well since you brought him home, I have to say what you are doing sounds dangerous to me. Like Phlox said, accidents happen all too frequently with birds. We have heard so many heartbreaking stories about the little guys being smothered or crushed.

Couldn't agree with the previous posters more.

Yes, you said you don't actually sleep while he's on your bed, but what IF you dozed off? What IF you accidentally rolled on him? You'd be guilt ridden for a very long time.

Additionally, please know that our fids need a good amount of dark and quiet time to sleep. Many parrot owners give their birds 10-12 hours of uninterrupted sleep. It's crucial to their well being. :)

He sleeps on top of me. It's not like I can forget he is there. I'm not going to fall asleep while he is out, I'm clearly awake otherwise he would be in his cage.
I just thought I would share this cute story about how I spend some quality time with my bird and hope to get some cute stories back. But it doesn't seem like that is what the responses are going to be.

I'm sorry if you're not getting the responses you were hoping to get.

Believe me, nobody here wants to hurt your feelings, we are all only looking out to prevent a POSSIBLE accident, nothing more. :)

It's crystal clear how much you love and adore your baby, and kudos to you for that. :)

Presently have six Greenwing Macaw (17 yo), Red Fronted Macaw (12 yo), Red Lored Amazon (17 y.o.), Lilac Crowned Amazon (about 43 y.o.) and a Congo African Grey (11 y.o.)
Panama Amazon (1 Y.O.)
Papaya used to fall asleep inside my shirt every night. When he did, I would take him out and put him in a free standing happy hut on my nightstand.

But yeah, these little birds get accidentally crushed quite often when people sleep with them. And they most definitely want to...

And the reason people are reacting like that is we've had too many experiences with "I accidentally crushed my bird last night."

So we just didn't get what you were saying, that's all.

My Zon slept on top of me everyday, he would go into his "blanky nest" and then poke his head out to "defend" the nest, it was a very special bond I had with him

I think everyone thought you were sleeping with him that's all, lots of us have our birds fall asleep on us (as long as WE are not sleeping)

Here is Karen's Macaw sleeping on her the other day:

I'm also a night person (it's 2:36am right now). But my little man loves his cage once it get's past 9:30pm. He wouldn't fall asleep on me unless his cage was unattainable. So sometimes it is, hehe, and he falls asleep, nestled in my shoulder which I adore. However, I try and not be selfish and eventually set him to bed (about 10ish).

As long as you're not falling asleep in bed next to him, I can't really see a problem besides him having a disturbed sleep possibly? They generally need a solid 10 hours or so, and waking up throughout the night probably isn't good for him. But so long as he's comfortable, out of danger and is able to achieve a good nights rest. I don't see this being an issue.

My birds always take naps on me. While I'm browsing the web, watching movies, doing whatever! I love it, it makes me feel like they safe with me. My babies go to bed every night at dark. They know it's time to go to bed once the sun starts going down, and sometimes they even put themselves to bed, since they have their own free range bedroom, they fly to their cages by bedtime. It's important to set a bedtime schedule for them! And don't feel attacked! I read a lot of sad stories about people accidentally Falling asleep and crushing their birds! But if you feel comfortable then go for it as long as your bird isn't getting interrupted sleep! :)

Wow, that's so cute - my birds never sleep on me. :) Quite frankly I NEVER saw my gcc Parry asleep! :D I'm very seldom sitting still when I'm home so they don't get a chance:) The only couple of times when Parry napped on my head was when I had really bad migraine and was laying in bed. He somehow made me fell better. :) However I'm not sure he was sleeping.
I just wonder if you have him for so long in your lap - what you do if you need to use restroom or get something to eat/drink? Just curious. I try not to wake up my birds at night (I'm also up until 2-3am) - they go to bed at 10pm no matter how much they protest. :) I sometimes let my gcc stay up with me until 11 or so, but he never sleeps more than 8 hours anyway.

Since he lays there for such a long time I usually wait for Rico to start moving around to find a more comfortable spot, he does it often enough, so while he's rearranging himself I'll move the blanket off of me and go to the restroom. He's usually waiting for me to come back on top of the cover when I come back and of he isn't I just feel for him in the blanket and whisper his name and he will come out. His cage is in my bedroom so he also gets plenty of sleep while I'm sleeping as well.

**if anyone is going to tell me that it's a bad idea to have their cage in my room for sleep reasons; I don't have any other choice right now. I move to my new apartment the 1st and the rest of the house is territory to 4 dogs and a cat, who all like him enough but I don't want his cage getting knocked over.

That's probably more a problem for your sleep than his. My GCC would be certain to wake me up before I was ready if she could see me.

I thought that was going to be a problem too, but I'm surprised at how quite he is. Rico doesn't really do a bunch of the outright screaming and screetching, which is okay by me because those really leave your ears ringing. He has started to make sounds like the birds outside my window and that's how he usually tells me he is ready to get up. But with my blackout curtains I can really control the light. He definitely gets 10+ hours of sleep and naps of he wishes.

My birds always sleep with my schedule, if you keep the room dark there is no reason why your bird would not get the sleep he/she needs, we are night owls and last night our baby Mac sat in my computer room between me and my daughter till about 1:30 AM !! He just didn't want to go to sleep LOL

Now this morning, he is STILL sleeping, I'm going to get him up about 11:30 AM

We just brought him home in the car from the breeder (120 miles away) he rode in the car on my daughters lap the whole way !! (I have a video that will be posted today) it was a FUN music birdy party ride :)

LOVE all the snuggle stories here, Thank You All SO MUCH for sharin <3

Part of the reason why so many negative response is due to the ideas it can give others especially young and new owners that it's OK to let their bird sleep with them. Me as one when I was young I smothered a parakeet cause I fell asleep. I learned my lessons at a early age that should not be done. So please don't get discouraged from the responsesame cause it's only for the benefit of others and their beloved parrots.
