Hi,
Im new to this forum but iv been a conure owner for over a year.
My conure Pepsy is a year she is a green cheek. And i recently bought a 5 week old baby, Now i broke the rule and bought her from a pet store so of course sense day one the baby was sick, sneezing, clear discharge, so i took her back, they kept her for 5 days and gave her some medicine they sell and she seemed fine, then today i was traveling with her and now shes sneezing.
Am i doing something i shouldn't? so i have her under a 15watt heat lamp, under a tiny blanket and i have been mixing her formula with: Marvel Aid
Broad spectrum antibiotic drinking solution. Should i buy some vitimin mixture or just go right to the vet. Thanks Erik:orange:

Hi, Erik, lovely to have you joining our forum. :orange:
I would take the bird to the avian vet immediately, I doubt whether anyone in the pet shop is a qualified avian vet.
Rather be safe, than sorry.
Keep us posted

PS Browse through old posts - Member - Ecclipse, her bird Hugo, was sick for so many months, sneezing, on medication etc.

Yes go to a vet ...

I can't believe they would put him on antibiotics for 5 days. There is a reason doctors tell people to FINISH the full course of antibiotics and not stop when they feel better. If you don't finish the full course then all you have done is killed the weaker bacteria and given the more viscous bugs an empty playground.

Also do not add antibiotics to water -NEVER try to treat a condition if you don't know what it is.

Please see a vet and follow through with any treatment they prescribe.

The good news is, if he cleared up while on the antibiotics at the store whatever he has is likely very treatable - but again make sure you follow through with any prescribed treatments.

I cannot believe a pet store would sell a bird that is 5 weeks old. I know there are regulations for selling cats and dogs but not sure on birds. No wonder the poor thing is sick. I would ask you vet about selling at such a young age. If you want your bird to stay alive you should see an avain vet asap!! Sorry to be so blunt.

Not at all, We have an apointment today at 3:00
He has not sneezed at all today, maybe it is just the noise and im not used to it, but anyway i will find out. I actully didn't know that, that was to young to buy them but they told me thats the best way to tame i guess. Well honestly i spent $450 with tax and food, lamp. but to be honest i dont want anything to happen to him. i appricate your bluntness.

The back of the bottle says 5 days but i find it hard to beleave that something you can buy in petco would be what i really need.
My green cheek PEPSI is one year and i bought her when she was 5 months and have never had a problem but shes not as fragil i guess.

The vet visit went well. He also said he was surprised they sold it so young.
He said his right nostril looked a little red, he did a culture wich we should get back tomorrow and gave us some meds . Other then that he said he looks good. i asked all my questions and have stoped feeling like im over my head. geting more confident with what im doing. We have play time three times a day and after feeding.

That is such good news. I would complain to the store and take my vet bill to the manager of the store. If that does not work then I would go up to the top of the coorprate headquarters of the company. They should be held responsible for selling such a young sick bird. But then again that is me. Some people are not comfortable in doing something like this.

Erik I am so relieved, to hear that Pepsy is doing much better. :orange:
I agree with SB, take the matter further. How many other "young sick" birds have been sold. Continue with the med's, and complete the course.
Give yourself a break, you have done everything possible.
Go and enjoy being Pepsy's guardian.
Go go go ....... spoil him.

I'm glad you got good news at the vet. I'm always surprised at how young some of the birds are that are sold at stores. Our Jade was 5 months old when we brought her home and Ruby's still being weaned at the breeder - she's 3 1/2 months (I think).

Sounds like he was lucky you found him.

Please give her as much water as she will drink. They also like juices (the ones without sugar/fructose. My bird loves carrot juice and the vitamin waters that so many of us drink now. I also change the water bowl twice a day as some food or other droppings can get in the water. She will only drink as much as she needs.

Correct seed usually as a treat if at all. When the vet says ok get birdie on one of the better pelleted diets. Petco and Petsmart do not carry. You can usually order on line or from your avain vet. My vet gives my bird Harrisons. It does come in finely grounded pellets for the smaller, younger birds. Glad you are keeping us posted.
