I adopted all of my birds every single one has been a 2nd and even 3rd hand birds. I do this because I know there's good birds out there that need homes. Geronimo my first ever GCC was adopted from a person I met through work, her poodle is a patient. I took Gerry in on a contingency that if she ever wanted him back she was more than welcome to have him no fee associated. Well time went by the lady stopped coming in as a client. I lost contact with her so in my mind gerry was in his forever home. Well she just called me, she said she wanted to see how he was doing and how he progressed with his behavior (huge biter). Towards the end of the call she asked me if I remember what I had promised her all that time ago, I said yes. Now that she wants him back I am heartbroken. He's one of three GCC we have, we call them the minions. I just wanted to share this story with you guys and the crappy situation I am in. I will miss you gerbear. :(

I'm so sorry. How awful! I don't understand why she can't just be happy for Gerry. He has such a great life with you. Does she not realize that tearing a parrot away from his family is devastating for the bird? It's not like re-homing a domesticated cat or a dog. Promise or no promise, I believe that she is being selfish and cruel.

Is there any chance that she would let you keep him if you paid her what she originally paid for him?

Aw, I hate to hear that. Not only are you attached to him, but the 3 GCC's are buddies and have their little flock. Now the other 2 will be mourning. I'm so sorry, I feel your pain.

Even with the contingency, asking them back after a very long period of time, it goes without saying is just tacky. There should be some "common courtesy" about what happens to the dynamic when so much time goes by. She's upsetting both people and birds!

How long have you had him for? I'm sure there must be done legal recourse for you to keep him since it's obviously in his best interests to stay with the people and dock he's bonded to. Honestly I think it's selfish and kind of cruel for her to do that to him. I have a horse on permanent loan to another home and I would never think about taking him back now from the family he knows and the horses he's bonded to

So sad. I bet he takes to biting again. and you may just have him back in a short while. I think you've had him long enough to justify that he stays where he's at, for his own mental/ physical wellbeing. She should be made to understand this. I'm sure if she would have called you after a few months you would not have had a problem with giving him back. Too much time has passed and no contact. Like the others have said, he's acquired his flock. To separate them know would be devastating to all, including you. I sure hope you can find a way out of this deal and keep Gerry.

I'm so sorry, what a shock after so much time has passed with no contact. I wish Gerry's former owner could find it in her heart to leave little Gerry in his home with his flock and human family. I agree with Julie, that's a tacky thing to do to the birds and to you.

I think that her wanting him back after all this time is so cruel, to both you and Gerry. Is there any way you could explain to her how terrible this will be for him, to lose you and his flock mates? I hope you can work it out to keep him, I am so sorry this is happening to you. Could you try what Emily suggested about trying to buy him? That perhaps she would be happier with a baby?

How sad :(
Lesson learned?

I think that is extremely inconsiderate of your feelings.

What NeRvE

On the other hand, you are WONDERFUL! training and providing a good home.

You have my respect and admiration for behaving so graciously in the end :)

I'm so sorry. I agree with what others are saying. I would think after all this time Gerry would be happier to stay in a forever home. Who knows what will happen in the future as well... could this happen again... I can appreciate her wanting to spend time with Gerry now and she may very well have missed him dearly. But, in the end what will be the best situation for the birdy?

I think you need to speak up for him, he can't tell her that he is soooo much happier with you, and the life you saved him from. Promise or not, I feel you, wanting to stand by your word is great, BUT, in this case, looks as it could be letting the little guy down. There's no guarantee that he will not return to biting or not. But one thing for sure, if you do this, and he does resort back to biting, and you again take him. He may not trust you in the same way he does now. I feel once you take away his friends, home and you. He may well never trust anyone again. After all, look at it from his view. What did I do wrong?? I know people rehome all the time, but the fact of the matter is, you changed him, you care for him, you saved him! I'm truly sorry if you feel I'm not being fair, but before you honor your word, PLEASE, PLEASE think about what is more important, your word, or his wellbeing.

Thank you all so much for your support and kind words. I truly needed them. He didn't come from a bad home. Her mother was sick and had to move to England to care for her, she intrusted him to me because she knew I would care for him. She recieved him from a bad home, she worked very hard to get him not to bite and scream bloody murder. I just finished the job. Still she came by I tried to show her that he had bonded with echo and was very happy and healthy. She took him home. I just hope he's happy and doesn't become depressed. Or if he does maybe he can come home who know I just want him to be happy and thrive.

Poor you... you did the brave thing and let him go without saying anything. In some ways it is a lovely story - a bird who, from a very bad beginning, is now loved and cared for by two families..

I agree with most of the above, but I still feel this person put themselves above what's best for the bird. I just pray it works out well.

you could try to officially buy him from her.
it's just sad that she only thinks off her and not off the bird.

Sorry I feel she took advantage of your good will and efforts. I didn't see how long you've had him but he will change at her home. Did you leave an opening in case it doesn't work and she wants to bring him back? Also call and check on him. If things don't go as she's pictures she may opt to see if would take him back, but this time no take backs.

I don't know all the details but best of luck and don't feel bad.
