So I have a 5 and half week old ysgcc that I'm currently hand feeding/ weaning. ( yes I do have lots of experience and a breeder a phone call away) I also have a 6 week old teil which I am hand feeding for my mother.

What worries me is the fidget the conure will become lonely once the teil goes off to his new home. I work from 8-2:30 every day. He will get time out in the morning before work and as soon as I get home. Lots of toys etc.

How can I make sure that he won't be a lonely only child?

Birds are more social animals than humans will ever be. I prefer that birds do not go to homes where they will be alone most of the day, as this is unnatural for them. I like birds to have a friend at home at least most of the time, either avian or human. Consider a second bird for your buddy. That said, never get your pet a pet. You have to be aware that any bird you get may or may not ever get along with the bird you already have, so you may end up with two pets who don't like one another. However starting young should help that some.

I do agree...especially if you aren't home all the time and maybe even if you are. It's not good to get any creature over-bonded to just one person. That can lead to issues. Why not get another baby cockatiel for yourself to keep the baby company later on?

I agree with Phlox about the cockatiel, I forgot to mention to make sure you either get two of the same gender, or species that will NEVER cross. a cockatiel is a good size to have with (and I do not mean housed in the same cage as) a GCC, and they are far enough apart in species they will never hybridize.

I agree with SilverSage and Phlox. Fiji was much happier once we got her a little brother, Sundance. They live in the same big flight cage together. Now I don't feel guilty in the morning, when I leave for work! Getting another baby tiel would probably be better, like SilverSage said, then you don't have to worry about breeding.

Btw, your little Fidget is adorable and looks like my Sundance probably did, when he was baby! Keep posting those pics!

I had to get 4 companions for my green cheek conure since he was very lonely when he were away from home for long days. He is VERY happy with his new friends and loves them all! And he actually bonded better with me and my husband too. I'm not an expert, but I would definitely recommend to get a friend or two for him. Birds live in flocks. :)

I have a single conure (and dogs). It can be done but will require more work and effort on your part to provide a full life for your bird.

I work each day and my dogs are home with Gilbert. They are just kind of there. Gilbert can watch them a bit, look out the window, play, etc, but then when I get home, I make a point to really socialize him. He goes out for walks, flies around, goes to stores, etc. He has come to work with me, but that is only every so often.

Having another bird in the house adds another level of interaction, learning and stimulation, but it does also add to the training, vet bills and large amount of time to spend with each bird.

But anyhow I thought I would just chime in because I do have a single bird and he is such a happy little guy, always cheerful, never squawking, friendly....etc. So if you don't get a second bird, it can be done with enough energy invested. :)

Thank you for the replies.
See my issue is my Husband does not want another bird in the house so I really need to compromise with him on this.

I to have 3 dogs which keep Fidget Entertained, He is out and with me or by his cage from the time I get home to bedtime. He honestly hardly pays attention to the Teil now that he is getting bigger ad becoming more independent.

I will have to see what happens when the teil goes to its new home I guess. This teil is a special case and I think its going to be a special needs bird as I rescued it from a breeder who was feeding it weetbix, it was supposedly 6 weeks old but looked like a 3 week old cause the only feathers t had was on its wings, he is now supposedly 9 weeks old but cant even perch yet, very weak in the legs.
