RE: bird expo

Just have to share this.
A couple of years ago we went to the bird expo. I'm not a bird person (at least not then) but the first booth really impressed me. She was so good with her birds. They all looked healthy and happy. Her daughter and son-in-law were both very knowledgeable and helfull. That year they had the building packed with birds and exotic reptile booths.

Last year wasnt so busy. Could have been the heat plus we had the big Rim Fire and that sort of scared people off. No one wanted to take their birds out in the smoke (I dont blame them). Anyway, that was the year we bought Sheldon off the first bird booth from the year prior. We had to go to her house to pick him up.

Anyway, This year I was hoping for the big turn-out of bird booths along with Sheldons breeder. The breeder from a couple of years ago wasnt there, and there were only two or three other bird booths. I wasnt very impressed with either of the two we came across. One in particular was a breeder that over breeds. My daughter and I looked at her birds at her house before we bought Sheldon. This breeder does hand feed her babies but doesnt have a lot of personal time with them as did the breeder with Sheldon. Her birds had ratty tail feather and just didnt look happy.

There was another guy there that had Blue crowned conures (?) He had one on his back and the other he was holding. Not sure if he was holding or tormenting..it was really strange how he handled theses babies. He put the one back in with the other bird and the babies settled in with each other, got close and relaxed. It was so cute. I pointed it out to my daughter how content those two birds were and at that moment the handler rattled the cage! I couldnt f$%^ believe it! Poor babies :-( just broke my heart.

I'm not sure if I'll be going back to the expo next year. I was really hoping Sheldons breeder would have been there. I do have to visit her soon and share with her how well Sheldon is doing. And thank her for being gentle and loving with her birds. What a difference it makes. Our bird experience would have not turned out as pleasant if we would have got a bird from one of the other breeders and not knowing or being informed of what we needed to do.

Re: bird expo

I agree RavensGryf. I was very careful not to touch anything but it never occurred to me to strip when I got home. When we went the first time I just had that gut feeling about the first vender that I really liked. When I went to her house I was so impressed how she had her aviaries all set up. Very clean and organized. When anyone askes me about my bird I always tell them that if they are interested to go see Sue "she has the best birds ever". I just thought it was sad to see how some breeders work the "birdie mills".

Re: bird expo

It's just a shame IMO when a "good" breeder takes their babies to a place like that and gets them all exposed to potential diseases, not to mention bringing them back into the home.

I know there are many breeders who do NOT take their babies to bird marts for that very reason. It's too bad it has to be like that... I mean, they're fun to go to.
