Female green cheek
Hi everyone

I hope I am writing in the right place please let me know if not.

So I'm living in Germany and looking for a Green cheek conure I have done my reasearch for some months now and am sure that a green cheek is the right bird for me.

I have found a breeder with a young bird three months to be exact naturally rared by parents rather than hand rared. From what I have read a naturally raised baby is better; better health, lower likelyhood of physoclogical problems etc. but any opinions on that toppic would be appreciated. My biggest worry is that when I asked the breeder if the bird has been to the vet he reacted rather strangely saying that the bird had not been to the vet as it is healthy and that if I think the bird is sick then why do I want it. I have not yet seen the bird in person and am not assuming it is sick I am just trying to ask the right questions etc. all other questions bout diet etc. were answered willingly.

So whats your opinion should the baby definitely go to the vet before I think of purchasing him?

Should I be looking for another breeder entirely (I am a little reluctant as breeders and birds are hard to come by)

Any advice is much appreciated

Thanks

Thanks everyone for the wonderful advice, we will be going to meet the baby next week I have looked around on the internet like suggested and people have only good things to say about the breeder and his birds. We will be going to meet the baby next week hopefully we are a good match and we can bring home new family member! So exciting!!

Thanks guys

I don't know about Germany, but here if you buy a bird from a licensed breeder they are all leg banded, vet checked and have a birth certificate. I bought only one bird from a pet store and it was vet checked and had 2 week health guarantee.
Your breeder probably doesn't want to spend extra money to do a vet check, but he should.

That's hardly a universal truth. Not all breeders do any of those things. There's no laws regarding that and many backyard breeders have healthy good babies but don't 'follow the rules'.

And in a lot of Europe, the idea of taking a bird to a vet is bizarre, which is probably why he reacted that way. I don't think it means you can't get a bird from him, but you'll just want to schedule a visit yourself, especially if you already have a bird to prevent spreading disease.

I agree with Phlox, I would judge more on the experience you have when you go to see the bird in person and see what the conditions are and also try to see if you could find other people's opinion that have used that same breeder. I did not have any paperwork or proof that my breeder knew what they were doing other then past experience that my first bird was great and there are no complaints on the Internet about the breeder. They are a small place but they do good work and I had no reason not to trust them. They have provided lots of people with quality well raised birds so I went with them again and took their word for it. Our bird is so lively and healthy! I just went to the store they work with a few times and ask other people that were there, people with macaws and all types of parrots and everybody always had a great opinion so hopefully you could find others to give you that information as well!

I was talking about the licensed breeders, not backyard ones (from whom most of my birds came!) LOL Even Petsmart has its babies checked by a vet. But I wouldn't worry too much about this - just ask if your breeder has a warranty (like 2 weeks or so).
