he is 2yrs old, im his 3rd and Final owner, he didn't look good when I bought him, but we gave him antibiotics and fresh foods with a parrot mix also. he is missing a toe on 1 foot and his perches were put in wrong and his other foot looked a little like bumble foot, he is now in a larger cage with my cinnamon and a variety of perches. he also had no leg tag when I bought him, but I couldn't pass him up, is it maroon bellied conure?

This is neither a Green Cheek nor a Maroon Bellied Conure, but a Black Capped Conure. I dont think Black Capped typically have the red on their bellies, so it is possible he is a hybrid of a black capped with a maroon bellied or green cheeked conure. What color is his tail? The main difference between maroon bellied and green cheeked is the tail color. A mbc will have a green tail, while a gcc will have a red tail (except with turquoise). Also, a maroon bellied will have a lot of green on the head and neck where a GCC will have mostly grey. So this is either a black capped, or a hybrid of a black capped. Where did you buy him? If you bought him from a pet store or a "hobby breeder" there is a chance that they do not realize they are creating hybrids/selling birds under the wrong name, and they really should be informed.

Never mind, it sounds like you got him from a private party? I am glad he has come to you. It sounds like you have him caged with your cinnamon now, is cinnamon the name of the bird, or do you mean a cinnamon GCC? Please be careful not to allow him to breed with your GCC if this is the case. Because the Pyrrhura conures often look so similar (if not we would not be having this conversation at all!) it is very hard to note the small differences in a hybrid sometimes. Since 1992 it has been illegal to import most species of parrot into the USA, so as far as the gene pool goes "what we have is all we get" and it is important not to pollute the stock we have by accidental hybridization.

Best of luck with your little guy! I hope to see more pics and updates!!

The part that's confusing me is his neck/nape. I'm not an expert with Conures but it reminds me of a Black Capped Conure. Then again he has red by his legs...I'm quite stumbled too!

Ah! You beat me to it, SilverSage!

I agree with SS that it is a prominently Black Capped hybrid, crossed with a green cheek maybe or it could be with an MBC.....at this point, everything is going to be guesstimation as there's no way to tell what its species mix is.....true black caps are smaller in body than their cousins.....

The problem today is that unless you know the breeder and they keep good records on their birds, you really don't know what you are buying.....too many people have let their birds breed without any consideration for blood lines and preserving gene pools, they're too interested in trying to make a $$$.....

As you can see from these pics, a true Black cap will have red shoulder coverlets, which yours doesn't have and no red belly, which yours does have...BCCs also have a yellowish blush to their face cheeks, though some may look greenish-yellow.....and if this is your laying hen, she's older than 2 yo, BCCs mature between 2 & 3.....

he needs work, I am at least the 3rd person to get him, he is not tame like my cinnamon conure Mango, she is out all the time and has actually chosen my younger son instead to be her owner, they play and watch tv together LOL its so cute, but he is flighty and seems to not have had much taming at all but we will be patiently working with him as soon as this egg situation is over, Mango wont be happy about losing her sleep house :( she never liked the cozy corners and my husband even tried making Mango her very own comfy sleep area (which was very nice, he's good at making lots of things) but she likes the actual house to sleep in :(
any suggestions of different sleeping arrangements? LOL

He does look like a hybrid! That's so cool! :D I'm glad he likes your son! He will be more comfy if he has a best friend! :) And sorry I can't help you with the sleeping, I hope someone else can help!

if he is hybrid, how do you classify him? I keep a notebook of what my birds are and age and what they like or dislike, that way my kids will know

I don't know maybe a black capped green cheek mix? Or if you wanted to mix the names you could say a black cheek mix? :)

Since at least at this time, there's no way to test for specie, list it as an assumed black capped conure, crossed with ??? There is no acceptable acronym for an unknown, so as KQ offered, make up your own, but explain the situation in your notes, otherwise someone looking probably wouldn't know what you were talking about.....

The tail is dark, but it cannot tell if it is green or red from the picture. To me that would be the best way to pick the most likely species he is crossed with. If it is red he is most likely a black capped/green cheek, if it is green it is most likely a black capped/maroon bellied. As far as sleeping, if the birds are housed together there is no reason to have any special sleeping arrangements, though some people suggest a fuzzy perch instead of a fuzzy hut. Sleeping huts and boxes are an invitation to breed :(

Yeah, if you want her to stop laying, don't let her have a spot that would equal a safe haven for eggs, No larger happy huts, no boxes or anything she can go inside to lay. There are plenty of posts on how to reduce egg laying. Changing the lighting to snap her out of breeding mode, taking certain foods away etc etc. :)

Good Luck and THANK YOU for adopting an older bird and being a helping contribution to the crisis of birds needing homes!!!

Thanks, and they only had the 2 eggs, she never laid any more, the 1st egg was on the 14th and her 2nd on the 16th so as soon as these are done with, I will take the box and try the fuzzy perch, she never liked fuzzy or cozy corners and if the hen sits on the eggs more than the male then both separate owners I bought these birds from told me the wrong sex for them, unless the eggs are not fertile and they are both hens lol
