Hi there! I am new to this forum.
I am considering adding a sun conure to my life come April.
I have been in touch with a breeder who has a clutch of three. I have first pick if I want one, and I am welcome to meet the parents and see the babies.
I have always admired suns for their beauty, and personality.
But.... I understand they are naturally VERY loud birds.
I want to know if they scream all the time, or is it just at dusk and dawn?
Can you actually train them not to scream or is it just a part them you have to deal with? How loud is their screeching actually? I've watched many youtube videos but I am sure that doesn't compare to what it's like in real life.
Is the noise level so bad that their cage cannot be in your bedroom?
And what types of bird cages are best suited for conures?

Looking forward to meeting all of you and your birds!

My Sun is not noisy at all! He does a couple chirps once in awhile, but nothing too loud or obnoxious! The only time he gets loud is when he gets really excited like when the dogs are playing near his cage which is in my bedroom. He makes no sounds at all in the dark. The only sound I ever hear in the dark is when he makes his way to his food bowl and is crunching pellets. I know that if you have multiple conures they can get loud as they are talking to each other.

I think a lot depends on the individual bird. However, Suns normally are some of the loudest conures. I love their temperament but wouldn't chance the noise level when I had to choose. I went with a gcc.

Sassy - 13 y.o. Blue Front Amazon, Cisco - 6 y.o. Sun Conure, Peanut - 8 y.o. U2
Fred - 2(?) y.o. Cockatiel, Ginger - 3 or 4(?) y.o. Cockatiel
My Sun is loud at times, but luckily not ALL the time. I love him dearly! You can try to teach him to make other more acceptable sounds. There are threads on the forum for training them. I have never felt the need to do that, as he isn't loud that often. I have all my parrots in the rooms where there is the most activity so I'm not sure about placing in the bedroom, unless that is the room you spend most of your time. My fids sleep all night so if that's what you're referring to that shouldn't be a problem I don't think. My SC's cage is 34"Wx20"Dx44"H. If you give them LOTS of toys of all kinds that will keep them occupied and hopefully make them less apt to screech. Good luck...keep us updated and let us know what you decide!

Sun Conure
Our first sun conure, Robin was very spoiled so he wanted to be with us al the time. We encouraged it by yelling his name and he'd call back. They aren't loud per se. It's how you talk to them. We thought Brax was super quiet but when I leave the room he gives me a 'call'. Our new cage for him is on wheels so we can move him to hang with us!

Presently have six Greenwing Macaw (17 yo), Red Fronted Macaw (12 yo), Red Lored Amazon (17 y.o.), Lilac Crowned Amazon (about 43 y.o.) and a Congo African Grey (11 y.o.)
Panama Amazon (1 Y.O.)
Mine was only loud twice a day. Early morning greetings when I got up, and in the evenings when I got home from work. "Happy to see you."

Results may vary... they can be screamers.

Mine was one of the best birds I ever had!

Sun Conures are really beautiful! They also have really fun personalities. They have the capability of being very loud for sure. But mine (like some of the others have stated) is really not loud very often at all. Sometimes just a hello yell, or if she is alarmed about something. Other than that she is pretty quiet.

Mine gods through fazes, sometimes he's loud all the time, sometimes he's quit as a mouse. He always says good morning though. He can get pretty loud f he wants my attention. He is in the living room/ dining room, were we spend all are at home Time ( I live in an apartment ). He is a very good boy though, and he makes sure to tell me that all the time lol. They are little clowns, but they are so much fun. Don't let there loudness get in the way of your falling in love with them.

However, mango (sun conure) is a loud eater lol, but other then that he's quite at night. My gf used to have him in her bedroom, and when it was his bedtime. You never heard much of him after he settled in to sleepy town.

I will measure my cage tomorrow for you

I'm getting a Sun Conure in a few months. It's only 2.5 weeks old at the moment and being hand raised.
The best thing you can do is ignore it’s screaming right from the beginning. As soon as you get him, if he’s screaming, ignore him. My Sun learnt right away that screaming got him ignored, which is not what he was after, so he hardly does it. Once in a while he’ll be a little noisy, but it’s not constant. Also, he’s not too loud, I mean, he’s loud, but not as bad as people make it out to be. If he’s sitting on your shoulder and does it in your ear though, your ear will be left ringing.

I don’t have him in my bedroom because we’ve got carpet, and he’s a messy eater. He has a tall cage that opens at the top, and it’s full of toys. When he was still with the breeder, he HATED his cage, and actually learned how to open it at a very early age to let himself out. I was worried that he’d be the same when he came home, but he likes his cage. He has lots of toys, gets lots of treats, and the top is always open when we’re home, so it’s not so much a cage, but his place. We’ve also got cats, so I suspect he sees his cage as his safe place.

I was worried about the noise two when I was looking at Suns, but I’m so glad I got him. He’s such a sweetheart, and by teaching him early that screaming isn’t okay, he’s nowhere near as loud as what others lead me to believe he would be.
