"Quinn C. Pickle" Dusky Conure born 12/14/14 home 3/18/15
After much research and consideration, I will be putting a deposit down on a hand raised baby Dusky Conure this week. S/he won't be able to come home for a few more weeks. I'm curious if anyone here has a Dusky. It seems the Sun and Green Cheeks are the most popular. I knew I couldn't handle the noise of the Suns. I met the baby Dusky and was told they are the quietest and gentlest of the conures which played a big part in my decision. I'm just curious as to why they don't seem very popular if this is the case. Is it because their coloring isn't very flashy? Being new to birds, flashy isn't my top priority and I just want a nice, healthy, reasonably quiet bird.

a very cuddly bird from what I've read :) low noise level but high pitch screech and I've also been told many times that its all down to the individual bird.. you can have the quietest bird and it could turn out to be quite loud lol

dusk's look awesome not unflashy atal i don't think :)

good luck with you new baby :)

It's good that you have been doing your research about potential companion birds and that is commendable because too many birds are purchased as impulse buys, as can be evidenced by the number of birds looking for new homes...in rescues and like you mentioned, dusky conures are quiet birds & they don't have any stand out traits that would endear them to impulse purchasers..... Everything you've discovered & what JJ has said about these birds is true, including the screeching, but then that's the nature of the beast, conures can be noisy as can virtually all parrots.....

Since you mention hand-raised, I thought I'd mention that the terms hand-raised and hand-reared (as pertains to companion birds) are often used interchangeably but are usually interpreted differently, especially by persons who do little or no research into what they are actually buying.....

Simply said, hand raised or hand-reared normally means that chicks have been removed from the nest and raised by breeders and/or hand feeders while hand-tamed can mean almost anything from not being afraid of human hands to understanding commands of step-up/step-down.....

If a purchaser thinks these terms mean something else, they should address the specifics with the breeder/seller they are buying or plan to buy from.....

Good luck with your new feathered friend.....

Mine was one of the smartest little birds I ever owned, from a companion parrot standpoint. He was also quite evil. He came to me with conure spoiled bird syndrome. We were the 5th home for this bird...

He was a horrible screamer when we got him, and it was very nearly on to home number 6 before we got his behavior under control. But who knows what the other homes did to get him to that point. He was pretty out of control when we got him.

He could be a cuddle bird at times. He could also be a stinker.

Eventually, we harnessed that little brain in a constructive fashion, and he became my best trick bird. You never had to show him anything twice... you just had to keep thinking up new things to show him.

Sadly, as smart as he was, he wasn't street smart. He got spooked outside one day, and flew into a neighbor's tree. (He followed the sound of the other bird.) The other bird turned out to be a great horned owl... I couldn't get there fast enough.

Thanks Weco! I met the woman who is hand raising the birds and she explained the difference between what she does, which is quite involved, and what many others would consider 'hand raising'. She spends a lot of time with her babies and they are already learning the 'step-up' command and learning how to lay on their backs in her hand as well as love being petted on the head and neck. I work in animal welfare so was able to correlate it to the foster homes we have for feral kittens. It's the difference between a kitten coming back simply of age and weight for adoption and a kitten coming back social and friendly and a good adoption candidate. She spent a LOT of time with us and I'm feeling very confident that I'll be getting a nice, healthy baby.

Picked out and put a deposit on my new baby today! He'll be ready to come home on St. Patrick's Day. Still thinking of names but was thinking something Irish. I really like Quinn (it means intelligent). My son wants to call him Little Pickle.

It's so odd to see them with "baby eyes," before the color change. They just pop out at you after the color change.

Dusky conure eyes are amazing...

I like the name Quinn too. I just got a puppy a couple months ago and we wanted to name her Quinn but my dad was like no. So we ended up calling her Pandora. Dusky Conures are so cute and have so much character by just their facial expressions. I wonder why their on the rarer side.
