Tree brances safe or unsafe?

I was thinking of building a play stand from branches of our large Camphor tree but I can't find the Camphor (Cinnamomum camphora) tree on any list of safe or unsafe plants. It has never been treated with any sort of chemicals. My parents also have several large Pepper (Schinus molle) trees that have never been treated with chemicals but I can't find that on any list either. Does anyone know if Camphor and Pepper trees are safe for birds?

Hmm. Camphor is a type of evergreen tree, and it's used to produce the essential oil camphor... which has not been listed as safe for birds. I would say that because of the many grey areas involved with it that I would consider it unsafe. The pepper tree is also a type of evergreen that has leaves and berries classified as toxic when consumed by poultry based on what I've found, so I'd also say that one is a no-no. I would imagine for some birds it's safe to consume if their diet was adapted for it, but because we're not positive about our parrots then I would black list it just to be safe.

Thanks Weco! I had looked at 4 or 5 different lists and none of them had either tree on the safe or unsafe list. I will save that list you have as it seems VERY complete! Guess I'll stick with the manzanita they sell at the bird store.

Yes, your hibiscus is a safe plant.....you have to keep in mind that many compilations of information, on the internet, were compiled by people who wanted their 15 minutes of fame and those compilations were often usurped from other lists & most never authenticated.....when I posted that link, it was in response to a request about camphor tree branches, but I did not check the validity of the other information on the link!

Here are several links that although they, like virtually all websites may be fluid, if you do a sample search of some of the data/text on an old site, you can generally find the current site address and that's usually the case with qualified information databases, while that's often not true with a lot of the purported marketing spin from product manufacturers/vendors.....enjoy:

Ha, gotta love it! I have a list of poisonous fruits and plants that list raspberries as poisonous- causes cramping and diarrhea! I also used to collect old books and a book on pets, 1916ish, lists the Coral snake an a perfect pet, very docile! And- a book on relationships (1890) lists certain activities as dangerous and can lead to blindness!
