My baby GCC I think is 12 weeks... And will NOT keep his/her band on... The day I brought him home the guy had to put it back on then. And yesterday morning the little twit got it off again.

It does not need to be on right? I put it in my jewelry box for safe keeping.

 The leg band should NOT just be coming off like this. That would mean the breeder put on the wrong size band.

Please do keep it off - to prevent possible injury.

No, it doesn't have to be on but it is helpful if your bird ever escapes. It might help get him home, as well as prove he is yours. I love Sammy but if you put him in a pile of Quakers I couldn't pick him out. A band would be nice for that! But if its coming off it is a hazard.

From my Knowledge...no...it's for identification purposes for breeders. Then Again,
some states have laws in tracking certain species of parrots and require banding.

Though I really think it's just an option, Least that's what I know.

So if the breeder put the wrong size on is there any way to rectify that? I agree if he ever got lost it would be helpful. Although that should NEVER be a possibility.

There is nothing the breeder can do now, no. She either is inexperienced and bought the wrong sized bands to begin with, or she waited too long to band your bird, and the one designated didn't slip over the foot any longer, so therefore she grabbed the next size, one that would go over the foot.

I don't know the rules/regulation for your state, but I'm sure if you Google it, you'll find out whether MD mandates that a parrot be equipped with some form of ID (whether via band and/or microchip).

I googled and found nothing regarding Maryland state regulations or laws involving pet birds.
Maybe I'm not searching the right phrase?

I personally despise leg bands. One of my bird lost her foot because of leg band. So I get mine removed.

Neither of those even mention bands...
I had to reschedule my vet due to us getting snow tomorrow but I suppose I can wait and ask him.

Sorry to hear you had to re-schedule. Will this winter EVER end? :54:

I can tell you what my A-vet did for me and Hunter (my 16-year old YN Amazon): He removed her band, then taped it to a piece of paper which he signed, stating the removal was necessary due to callus forming (which was true). Here in NJ I have to register all my birds yearly for a fee of $20 in total. In order to register them I had to prove they were captive bred. Leg bands were NOT an immediate requirement, a letter from the breeder would have sufficed.

So whatever your case may be, I'm confident if you bring the band to the vet, he can write you a similar letter. :) That is if you even need to register exotics in MD.

I don't think so?!? If so then I've been breaking the law for years but that's the first I've ever heard of it!

And no... It seems it won't end. I have horses and we are all desperately tired of

I'd just keep the band in your jewelry box, like you mentioned. I've worked with animal control for nearly 20 years and never heard of having to register parrots in MD. Of course, a microchip would help get him home if he's ever lost - I know you don't plan on him getting lost, but noone ever does!
The more common issue I see, and I am guilty of this myself, is not keeping a record of the band number (for banded birds) in case you ever have to identify him at a shelter as your bird.
