Make sure that all apple, orange and other seeds are removed before letting your birds eat the fresh foods. And make sure you wash all fruits and vegetable thoroughly. It's always best to go organic for your parrots to stay away from pesticides.

Brax doesn't eat ANY vegetables or fruit, just papaya treats! He makes a sour face and turns away.

That's a good list.

My bird would eat lots and lots of junk food if allowed. However, he gets lots and lots of fruit and veggies instead and knows if he doesn't eat a healthy helping of those first, he doesn't get any treats (that took quite a while for him to learn). We eat lots of fruits and veg (the humans of the house lol) so save ones that are toxic like onions and avocados, he gets some of whatever we're eating and that equates to a wide variety every day. My method is fruit in the morning (the sugar!) and veg at night. He gets his produce bowl before his other food so he has his healthiest food available when he's hungriest and fills up on produce. He knows he has to eat a good potion of his fruit or veg before he gets his other food (and has to eat that before he can sample the human food that is safe for him to eat). Favorites would be pomegranate, bananas, apples, citrus, broccoli, grapes, green beans, peas, corn, guava and any kind of squash, but he'll at just about anything in his dish except carrots (which he hates passionately!).



With the exceptions of the avocados, onions and mushrooms, he would get some of all these veggies in the average week (and seasonal ones too). Those are our weekly veggies though, not all for the parrot lololol. This bird reacted to fruits and veg as though they were radioactive when we first got him, but now he eats them well. Parrots can be very picky, and tend to like junk food, but it's very unhealthy for them not to have a big portion of their diet being fruit and veg. Just like a picky kid, it's your job to entice them to eat it

Love that photo of him with all of those fruits and veggies!!! Quinn goes for his 1st check up tomorrow and then I think I'll be able to start giving him more variety. He eats his mixed veggies very well. I did offer him a small piece of cucumber last night and he seemed to enjoy it. We also have a rabbit and a tortoise and I love fresh fruits and veggies so we always have a nice variety. My dogs LOVE sugar snap peas so we always have those.

Ok, so can anyone tell me if edamame is ok for them? He lost some weight at his 1 week check up so she told me to continue with the mixed veggies. I bought a bag at Costco and in addition to the corn, carrots, green beans, and peas, it has edamame (soy beans). I can pick them out if need be but if they are good for him then I'll leave them in. Also, should new foods be added one at a time....like a human baby, to make sure he doesn't have any reaction? So far the only new foods I've given him are cucumber which he loves and mango, which he didn't seem to like. They said stick with veggies more than fruit as they will help him gain more weight than fruit but that I could offer him an apple slice. I just don't want to throw too much new food at him all at once if that isn't good.

Yep, those seeds are fine

Tiki LOVES fresh Brussel sprouts. She chases them around the cage like a ball and eats them when she gets bored. Fresh mint and green beans are a hit too but she thinks carrots are of the devil.

Hey this reminds me. Last night at Trader Joe’s I saw a fruit called rambutan. It looked interesting and both Bumble and I like to try new things. Anyone know if it’s safe?

It's indigenous to the region ekkies come from, well within their reach and similar to lychee. So I should think the flesh (I've forgotten how to say in English) is ok. They're one of my favourite fruits - after I got over how they looked. I'll ask in the local parrots groups for you though!

Edited: Yep! They're safe! Just help Bumble peel it open (the trick is to squeeze and twist opposite directions and pull). Then he can have the fruity part

See my post on Freeze Dried chop. Nike is a very, very picky eater and in the three years I've had her has never taken even one bite of a veggie. Now with this chop she eats her veggies every day.

It took a little fruit juice for hydration to get her to try it but she seems to really relish it now after only a week of eating it.
