Molting or feather picking?

I have a 7 month old Blue Crown Conure that we acquired from a reputable breeder. For the past severe weeks, he has been losing lots of feathers on his back (between the wings) Does this look like feather picking or a standard molt? Thank you.

It is hard to tell from the picture but at 7 months and this time of year he is probably going through his first major moult. I would keep an eye on it though.

Here is a picture from another angle. Not sure why they keep posting upside-down. Thank you.

Well from that picture it does appear to be more of a concentrated spot than would occur with a moult. Have you seen him over preening in that spot? Are you giving frequent baths, that may help if he is itchy from moulting. The other thing is to make sure he has lots of preening type toys and things to keep him busy. I do see lots of toys so I would say up his baths per week and see if that makes an improvement.

Welcome to the forums, Junec! :)

Do you have any photos of feathers lost? They could be a good indicator whether your baby is in fact gnawing them off, or whether this is a hard molt.

I agree with Laura (labell), that in the second photo, I'd be inclined to say he's 'helping his feathers along' some how.

If you find feathers in/around his cage, have a close look at the shafts. If the shafts are intact and dry, then they were most like lost naturally. If they look damaged, then there's a chance he's indeed gnawing them off.

After having a second, long, good look at the second photo, I can see a good amount of pin feathers have emerged. :)

Thanks for your feedback. Honestly, most of the feathers I recall finding in his cage have been fully intact (without any damage). I will definitely keep a close eye on it from now on, though.

It's not too bad as of yet. Regular baths, daily or every other day, help tremendously with feather condition. It is moulting season for many birds, including conures. From the look of it from here, it looks more like barbering and some picking.
Is he getting regular baths? What is his diet situation?

My birds: Skyler/Sky, violet Indian Ringneck. Mother's birds: Norman, African Grey and Mildred, Blue Crowned Conure.
Looks like a molt from what I can see. Mildred looked terrible not long ago. She is growing in lots of beautiful new feathers now though. :)

Can you see any skin or not? That would be a good indicator that it is plucking. If you just see a bit of down sticking out I wouldn't worry at all though because that is what Mildred had not long ago.

Some better pictures could help.

Ah...this helps. Most of Quinn's chest looks very 'downy'. I asked about it at his check up earlier in the week and she said he looked fine but at that point he wasn't losing as many feathers as he has yesterday and today. But they are all intact with white, pointy quills and look like perfect little puffy feathers.
