Hi I got my Mitred Conure third hand. He had been kept in a two x three foot cage for over twenty years with three sides covered at all times. He had the worst case of scissor beak the vet or I had ever seen and His nails had never been clipped so they wrapped around his perch and it was awful watching him try to walk. I was told he was a viscous bird but I just had to take him. I got him home opened the cage and left the room. that night he finally came out of the cage and has never gone back in. He looks better than ever and he is smart talkative and very friendly.

Ok so Ive had him for five years now and this year I noticed he is now head to toe speckled with red feathers that used to be only on his head and ankles. and most recently his back feathers are now coming in a tangerine yellow. I think he is between 27-30 years old.

Question.. just old age?

Thanks

Hello and welcome to the forum!

Thank you for changing this little guys life, giving him a long awaited chance and finally an open door.

I'll let those more experienced with conures answer your feather questions.

Thank you for making his life better. I'm looking at my baby go crazy around the outside of her cage. I can't imagine keeping her locked inside and covered. It breaks my heart.

Now for your question - no clue. Lol

Thank you for rescuing this sweetie. I am not sure in conures specifically, but in many species of parrot, if they begin getting "random" red and yellow feathers later in life, it is often a sign of liver and/or kidney issues. When was the last time he had a well-bird exam by an avian vet to check kidney and liver values?
