I have a beautiful 4 year old brown throated conure named Charlie. Just bought him on April 18 2015
Is its safe for birds to sleep out of the cage at night? Because now that Charlie is out his cage he kind of takes advantage of the fact that he won't let us grab him and we have to wait for him to fly or waddle to us lol. Last night he was out of his cage late and he flew on to the TV and started falling asleep I didn't want to bother him because he looked tired so we let him stay there for a bit. We didn't go to bed till 11 30 last night and we tried getting him back in his cage but he wouldn't go. I didn't want to let him sleep out because I was worried he would do something and get hurt I even left all the cage doors open so he could go back in if he wanted. So I let him and just got up twice last night to check on him. He was good when I came out in the morning and I had to put my arm out to help him get back on his cage cause the TV is to high up for him to climb :). He seemed to like sleeping out and I'm happy he's comfortable enough to be out all day with us but should I let him keep doing this and is it safe? :)

BB stays out most nights but he will sleep on top of the cage.
He goes into it while I get coffee and his fruit for the morning. SO far I have not had trouble with him going in before I leave for work. I would not trust him out during the day :( I have two dogs he likes to mess with

Thanks for the quick response and Charlie is usually on his cage to when he's out but last night he discovered the TV and refused to move :) I think ill try to make him a play stand or get him a perch for outside the cage.

Both Fred and Bell go back in there cage on there own. Once lights go out. I guess because they both huts that they use every night it makes them feel safe.

Mine sleep out on the big playstand.

It depends on the bird, and how the home is set up.

If your bird stays put, and does not wander off, and you don't have potential predators in the house, it's safe.

If your bird generally does not have night frights it's safe. Every once in awhile it will happen, but you generally hear it. It's loud enough to wake you up - especially when it's a macaw in my house...

Honestly, those are things they generally either like, or don't like.

Py loved his hut. That place or inside my shirt...

The other two conures thought their hut (like my Tee Shirts) was a chew toy...

If he doesn't like it, why force him?

Personally, I would not let any of my fids sleep any other place than inside their cages. For my own peace of mind - and for their own safety.

Conures are really good at squeezing into tight spaces as well as being beaky and testing things. God forbid while you were sleeping he bit into a cord on the TV. I agree with Wendy I wouldn't sleep a wink if my birds were out all night.

I have stopped letting him stay out right after I posted. Just got to worried about it. What ever can go wrong will go wrong . Especially in my house :)

We had a grey that for 14 years he had free reign to come in and out of his cage and he was always good and always stayed on top of his cage when he wasn't inside eating. The only time he got caged was when we were going out of town.

However, I would never do that with my sennies, linnies, or God forbid, the terrorist, Zoe.

None at the moment
Kiwi always falls asleep on her swing hanging near her cage... I am always tempted to just leave her, she looks so calm and content. :) But once I found her in the morning sitting on top of my daughter, so since then I found it best to just move her to her cage and cover her.

Bad IDEA just read a story on here where I girl did that and woke up lying on her dead conure

Well, conures have a habit of sneaking into bed with you... if you're a sound sleeper, and you toss and turn, they can get squished...

Fortunately I sleep on my back, but there were more than a few occasions where I woke up with a conure sleeping on my chest. (Py.)

Yeah I had this happen to a cockatiel when I was a teen. Ripped my heart out. This was when I was the weird bird kid that road around town with a bird on his handlebars. Don't think I've ever gotten over her as even though my wife and kid both have wanted one, I just can't do it. Damn it now I'm all choked up at work.

As mentioned I think it's the birds preference. Bell didn't sleep in hers for months, then one night, bam she's nestled in. Fred on the other hand has always slept in it as when he was still being weaned they put him in his cage I bought and the hut was one of the first things he had. I guess since he didn't have nest mates anymore this was a good substitute.
