Hello Everyone!

I may be adopting a Blue Crown Conure and wanted to know more about them. They seem like a wonderful breed of conure from what I've read so far.

If you own one or are familiar with them, please tell me more about them. I would love to hear about it!!

Here is a pic of our little guy that may come home with us:

We go to see him on Tuesday! Thanks in advance for any info or advice you can provide!

Look at that handsome little guy!!!
You know I am biased because I LOVE LOVE LOVE my Gilbert so much. I can't imagine anyone not wanting him. :D Yes, he can be a little rock star, demanding brat on occasion, but he is so sweet that he gets away with it. Overall, cool and laid back and loving.
You are already so experienced with birds that I would say you will know your gut feeling when you hang out with him.

Oh, one questions for you! What is Gilbert's noise level like? I read that BCC are one of the loudest conures out there. I was just curious, so I can prepare myself! :09:

He is a chatterbox but not a screamer. You can hear him from far away (he can be on my shoulder walking down the street, chatting, 'come on, come on, give kiss, screech, good!" and people far away turn and look.) But it is somehow an 'easy on the ears' sound, a pleasant chatter for the most part. High volume but not too shrill.

And by whatever magic wand was waved on me, he never makes noise in the morning, even if I sleep late. He waits until I come downstairs and talks to me. My other birds have never done this. So I consider his noise level to be no problem whatsoever.

That info is really helpful! I read that they make a chattering noise but wasn't really sure what that meant. Just knowing that it is not an annoying shrill sounds good to me! :D

I have two of them and love 'em. They are not as flippy hyper as some of the smaller conures but they do have their moments. The usual morning and evening times mostly though sometimes Rosco gets a little wild and just needs to burn off energy flying back and forth between cage and play pen sounding off all the way.

They can be very vocal though I think a lot of my noise is sourced from Tootsie. She has always been extra vocal and kind of needy and a lot of Rosco's noise is just responding to her. She is approximately 30 years old now and is getting a little strange sometimes. Tootsie has never talked since I've known her though I'm told that she used to until she had an encounter with a pet snake in a former home. Rosco has picked up four or five things that he says and a bunch of unintelligible mumbling.

Both of them are very observant as to what is going around them and curious. Rosco has taken it upon himself to watch over the flock. If my senegal is getting into something, you can be sure that Rosco knows about it and he is going to sound the alarm. Same thing if someone walks in front of the window, he is going to tell me about it in no uncertain terms.

I think they are very intelligent and curious about the world around them. Both have learned my patterns and can even tell what foods I'm going to make for dinner by what pans I get out. (Big deep pot means PASTA!!! YUM!!! We want it NOW!!!)

Tootsie is a snuggler. She would spend hours snuggled up against my arm or leg either preening me or dropping off into a snooze. Rosco is a rescue who is afraid of hands, though we are making progress on that. He will sometimes land on my arm or leg and attempt to preen me but he does not yet realize that his beak can hurt. He has a problem with over preening/biting the tips of his and Tootsie's feathers off so it is possible he is using that same roughness on me. Though sometimes when he drills the tip of his beak into my arm I wonder if he knows exactly what he is doing. ;)

As for the level of noise, this is a video of Tootsie and Rosco having a couple of minutes sounding off one evening. Starts quickly and ends quickly. Other than the occasional alarm noise through the day, most of the time mine are not exceptionally noisy. I'm in an apartment and nobody has complained yet.

I want to show that video to Gilbert later! He only does that squawky call when the dogs go into their alarm barking (mailman, big dog walking by)....since he is an only bird living with dogs, he responds to his canine flock, LOL. Otherwise, yes, that often unintelligible conversation tone babbling is his usual. He gets these question inflections that crack me up. No idea what he is asking but he seems really animated so I go along with it.

Try getting a video of Gilbert reacting. That should be amusing. If I play it back to my pair, they will go off every time.

Blancaej, that could be a good way for you to judge just how noisy that a blue crown can be if you play it back to your potential buddy.

Wow, the video was very helpful! Thank you for posting it! They can be loud, but it sounds like it's not all day long! I was expecting conures to be loud anyway! LOL! I'm sure as long as he is entertained, all will be good! ;)

Ok, I played it a few times and he liked it and bobbed his head, but didn't make a lot of noise. Then I even played him the video of him watching it and he enjoyed that too, LOL.

That is cute. He sure seemed to take it all in stride and didn't get all that excited. Unlike my guys, if I play that video back to them it is total chaos. Maybe it is because they recognize each other's voices in the recording and get excited to hear what sounds like their buddy coming from elsewhere. Even a 2nd generation recording when I played your video perked them both up but fortunately they didn't go nuts. Though I played it after their usual evening fuss when they were on Tootsie's home having a mutual preening session.

Either that or Gilbert just thinks he is a dog! ;)

So this morning I was getting ready for work and my dogs were yapping at the garbage truck, and THAT is when Gil gets revved up squawking (because they are his pack/flock). I was upstairs but I had my phone with me to record it. LOL. They went on for about 2 minutes, probably until the truck was out of sight.
This is the noisiest Gilbert will ever be (and it's those darn yappers that get it going).

That is hilarious. And I will say this that seems like nothing compared to what Duke does when he sees me after a long day at the office.

My Sidney definitely makes more noise then Gilbert! LOL! My macs and kids get him going. He tends to make the most noise in the morning and when I get home. He squawked a bit when I first brought him to work whenever I left the room, but that is much improved now that he is getting used to the environment here at the shop. He can be loud, but I don't find it unpleasant really. Usually if I call his name that calms him down...sometimes anyway. LOL! I will have to get him on video so you can here him go!

They really seem to be responsive birds and react with a lot of noise when they see or hear something. Tootsie is a just plain noisy bird. She always has been and that is one of the things that has cost her at least 3 homes before she came to me. Rosco does not seem to be as noisy unless he sees or hears something to alarm at. But when Tootsie gets into one of her noise making moods, Rosco does a lot of "ME TOO! ME TOO!" squawking. He may not know what they are squawking about but he is going to join in with gusto!

Yeah, Sidney definitely feeds off the kids and the other birds. But I knew going in that conures can be loud but I live in the country on 13 acres. So I don't have to worry about it! ;)

And the noise doesn't bother me, I have macaws! LOL!

Tootsie and Rosco are my biggest birds so far. But in the next couple of years I would not mind adopting something bigger like a macaw. Once I have a house and space to adequately house and entertain one I'll start looking for an adoption. I've had great relationships with a couple of blue and golds over the years. So I might have that noise too but it does not bother me at all.
