How soon before you train your conure?

Hey guys, i'm getting a green cheeked conure at the end of the month and I heard your supposed to start training them first thing when you bring them home. Is this true? Could it stress them? This bird will be traveling from AZ to MN and we're in WI. Wo about 4 days of air travel(i'm not sure how long actually)and about 4 hours from WI to Minniapolis, MN. So a lot happening in one day for him, should I post-pone the training until he's kinda setteled down? Thanks guys

Yes, let him settle first. Definitely don't do a lot when he first gets through the door. Give him a day or two to chill, and then see if he even wants to come out. I was playing with Cody by the next day, but every bird is different. Training is important, but it doesn't have to start the second he gets through the door! Just let him settle a little first, it's a lot on the little guy!

Why in the world would there be 4 days of air travel??? and who would feed and water it for that length of time?, if you can't have a bird shipped and picked up on the same day, then DON'T do it! as for training that can all come later after the bird has had a chance to adjust to its new enviroment...........................

Oh wow, how did I miss that? 4 days of air travel? I would be worried about just shipping a bird for just a day, but 4? I'm also curious of the arrangements?

That must be a mistake...No one would ship a bird if the travel time was four days! Surely, it must be a mistake, Mrspy...or you're going to have a dead bird when it arrives!

Actually I'm really not sure HOW long it is. It's first class I know that. Maybe it's only 1 day. lol

I have had a bird shipped to me...I'm not aware that any animal, bird etc. travels first class???

Please be ABSOLUTELY 100% sure how long the air travel will be.

I am sure the travel arrangements "being 1st class" do not differ where birds are concerned. Would the bird be given water and food? I doubt it.
As Bobby mentioned if you can't have a bird shipped and picked up on the same day, then DON'T do it!

Air Freight, counter to counter, mon-thur, is the only way you should ship birds, the birds are taken by the shipper to the ticket counter of the transporting airline, continental, delta ect. placed in a pressurized cargo hold, flown to its destination, taken off the plane and directly to the final destinations ticket counter to be picked up and signed for by the reciever...

The bird is in a kennel with a single perch in it. It has a water bottle that's securely attached to the kennel as well as the food. I'm sure a breeder wouldn't ship unless they made it safe ore people would stop buying from them because it wouldn't be garantee'd that the bird live. She has a whole article that i've read. Gosh to think one slip of the tounge could make the thread completely shift.........

I will have no say on that but.... being freighted is another reason to quarantine. It may be housed near other birds that could carry diseases.

I don't know the breeder you are buying from, so can judge their reputation (they could be great or they could be awful, I don't know). However it would be smart to ring up and get EXACT details on the shipping. You want to know exactly where, when and how that bird is getting to you. This is not like ordering a T-shirt out of a catalogue, this is a living creature. If the breeder is any good then they should be proactive about notifying their customers of this sort of thing, just give them a call. If they are shifty about details, then I would think twice before buying from them, because as you say "'I'm sure a breeder wouldn't ship unless they made it safe ore people would [should] stop buying from them". If a breeder can't be sure on details of shipping, they may as well ship the bird in a cardboard box.

I feel that I need to bring this up:

After this post a lot of members asked you to NOT get another parrot, your answer was this:

Mrspy, from your previous threads your parents did not want you to get another bird. How did you convince them to not only get this conure but to also spend a lot of money buying it and shipping it first class to you?

Did you order this bird or your parents? Did they read any of these documents that you are referring to? Does these breeders have a website that you can direct us to?

The other thing that are confusing me is that you said 4 days air travel and everybody talks of shipping. Is this going to happen by air or by boat? If it is in fact by air then who is going to load this bird from the one plane to the next etc. ?

Actually I was dead-set on not getting the bird for the very reason that i'd be moving in maybe a couple years. But then my brother who HAS moved said that he visited a green cheek and he ABSOLUTELY loved him!!!! He wishes that he had one right now. Then my Mom was completely for getting the conure, especially since i'll be able to pay it off in 1 month with a future job that I got offered. They're not paying any, this is my bird so i'm paying all the expenses on it. Yes actually there is a website. It's www.pamperedpeeps.com you all should really check it out! (sorry I got the last bird for green cheeks

) I've told them about the research and info i've been getting, a lot of it on here. Ok, before I say anything else about the shipping i'm going to call the breeder and work out the details like you said.
