Harley and his oatmeal

So I'm having my apples and cinnamon oatmeal and over flies Harley. 'whatda doin?' he says, so I tell him I'm eating oatmeal. What does he do next? Face plant right in the bowl.... Guess I'm adding oatmeal to the list.

A long while back I was having spaghetti O's and Skitty wanted some. I didn't want him too, since SpagOhs are canned and processed. But that didn't stop him. Right when I had turned my eye away, he flew right into the bowl then took off and spread spagOhs all over the house. I would have been pissed if it wasn't so cute.

Does Harley like oatmeal? I think oats are okay for conures. Not sure about the cinnamon though.

Zilla LOVES oatmeal with cinnamon & apples! It's one of her favorite breakfasts. I make hers with water and mine with cashew milk.

Cinnamon is fine for parrots, some even say good for them. It helps with digestion and to regulate blood sugars naturally. (also great for humans who are diabetic)

Our favorite recipe is... Made after dinner at night...
1/2 cup oats
1/2 cup milk or water
2 Tablespoons applesauce (I make my own and leave it chunky)
2 Tablespoons dried cranberries (I dry my own in the dehydrator so I know they are preservative free)

Stir well, cover and refrigerate over night. Can be eaten cold or warmed up. We like ours warm.

I am going to try your recipe and see how Taffy likes it. It is good to know that cinnamon has some healthy qualities for parrots. Thanks for sharing Amanda!:smile049:

Wasn't sure about the cinnamon. Good to know. Apples are good for birds too (minus the peelings and the core).

I wish I could get Skittles off his carb craze. He has thing with pasta and breads. I may try the oatmeal too.

I read somewhere that cinnamon is good for something in birds. I just can't remember what (does anyone know?) I think a few articles and forum posts suggested it may help ward against an avian disease. The commen consensus was that it was harmless at the very least. I've been adding a tiny, tiny bit to Boomer's pellet food for the past 3 and a half years.

I do know that parrots love 'spicy foods'. They lack the taste sensor that we have when food is too 'hot' (spicy). Skittles loves chipotle sweet potato fries.

I've heard it helps with digestion and regulating blood sugars (I know it helps humans regulate blood sugars)

I any case it doesn't hurt them and Zilla seems to like some things better if I add a dash of cinnamon.

Really? I knew about the core and seeds, but I had no idea about the peel! I have been giving Lemon apple slices with peels and he just peels himself. Should I be peeling them for him?

I think the danger with apple peelings is pesticides, if I'm sure the apples are organically grown and there's no possibility they've been sprayed, I leave the peelings.

I use cinnamon in a lot of birdie recipes and Poppy loves cinnamon sticks. It makes for sweet kisses and their cages smell nice.

Yeah, that's the thing about peelings. If they've been sprayed. That's why I remove them. If you buy organic it's not so much an issue. But I still wash fresh fruits and veggies that I buy anyways.

It's rather easy to tell if a fruit has been sprayed or not. If it's waxy and shiny - it's been sprayed.

That's why organic foods don't look as 'ripe'. They haven't been sprayed. But they are often just as fresh.

I do know that with eggs, if you hard boil them, you can leave the shell for your bird. It's not harmful. (Why would it be, it's from a bird after all. LOL).

I never knew that about cinnamon sticks.

Though, I do love how Skittles smells now. It's hard to describe it - but I love burying my nose in his feathers. My neighbor thinks I'm weird cause I like to smell my birds.

People smell their fingers for hours after eating chicken, so I don't see what the issue is.

Oatmeal is a just a given... never seen a bird that wouldn't eat it. As long as it's not so hot it would cause crop burns.

Most of my parrots LOVE oatmeal. Usually mixed with some oat bran, made thick, and served plain. They either eat it from my fingers or they grab a chunk to hold in a claw.

Thanks, Allee! I only ever give Lemon organic apples anyways. For both pesticides and that waxy layer that normal apples seem to have on the skin. So, I will continue to leave the peels on! Thanks again.

Harley LOVES oatmeal. He was all over me trying to get in the bowl. He would take small bites off my spoon. Lol.

That's so cute what Skittles did with the
spaghetti Os. I'd be mad if I had anything white. Thankfully I don't! I don't like them so much so he doesn't get those.
