PLEASE HELP! Advice after emergency adoption

So my boss and landlord had a Sun Conure named Tuti. He was her husband's bird, but he is currently away in the military. She has been left to care for Tuti, and now that her daughter is in college and her other daughter is back in high school, no one is home to be with poor Tuti. He seems to be suffering with the circumstances. So she asked me if we would take Tuti from her since she knows we have our Green Cheek, at least until her husband returns from Afghanistan.

We agreed immediately and got Tuti this morning. His cage is a good size, but that's about the only thing I can say about his circumstances. He has VERY watery stools, but I don't know if this is stress-related or diet-related. She was feeding him wet white bread, parakeet seeds, and occasionally fruits and veggies. I don't know how long this diet persisted, or anything about changing it. I just know it needs to change ASAP. I worry about putting more stress on the little guy, he doesn't seem to be in the best health. I don't know for sure, but it looks like he may have plucked some, or maybe he's starting a molt, or something....but his feathers are coming out(like two little ones that i've seen in the last few hours), and he has a little bit of a bald spot on the back of his head.
Does anyone know if that's the beginning of a molt, or other possibilities? Also, how long should I monitor his poops before taking him to our Avian Vet?

Lastly, he doesn't have toenails on his one foot. My boss told me he was born like that, so I don't think it was fight related, but as a result he doesn't have very strong grip with that foot. His nails on the other foot are VERY sharp, and i'd like to get them trimmed, but i'd worry he wouldn't be able to stand up. Anyone have advice for that situation?

I'm sorry if any of these questions are stupid, or if i've left out any crucial information. I just feel a little overwhelmed, and really want to help Tuti to be healthy and happy!

Our Green Cheek is on a pellet diet, with added veggies from our dinner at night, and thought this would be a good thing to feed Tuti. But I don't want to stress him out so much I kill him. PLEASE someone help me out.


BY THE WAY Tuti is friendly. No biting, and steps up whenever asked. He wasn't clipped, so we did that this morning at a local pet store. Says his name, and has a pretty calm demeanor. My boss believes he is 3 years old. And given that I don't know if he is sick or not, should I keep him away from our Green Cheek? (Out of the same room?) Our bedroom is the only room with windows, so I wouldn't want to put him anywhere else...I'm not sure what to do.

I would keep him quarantined from your gcc till you can get him to a vet and get a clean bill of health. (or at least clean from contagious things)

I would not give him white bread, but the rest of the diet I would keep fairly similar to what he is used to. Perhaps a little pellets in there to see if he'll try it. Diet should be a slow change, especially with him showing signs of distress.

Definitely bring him to the avian vet to make sure none of his symptoms are illness related. You could have the vet clip the toes if they seem to long while your there as well. Sounds like he's plucking. I've never seen bald spots from normal molting.

Poor little tuti! Avian vet visit and quarantine important. Lots of good reading about diet in this forum. Good luck with the little guy..keep us posted.

Do quarantine the bird until he has a clean bill of health, you will feel better after being to the vet. Like everyone else says - go slow with the diet...

sounds like u have a bird in distress.. and his diet has to change. Bald spot on back of head is a bit skeery... usually when they pick its with beak..not claws. But yeah keep him away from your other birds for a bit..change his diet ASAP.. and don't be shy to take him to a vet. suns can be adorable and loving lil critters. I hope he is ok!!
