Question Male and female gcc conures dont get along

I have two gcc a male and a female, the female is a little shy and likes to hang out in her cage, I recently got a male in hopes that they can breed, when I introduced them I tried my hardest to make it like a love story, I put an apple in between them, she was fine at first but the dummy male started trying to show his dominance, I kept theyre cages separate but open for a while and it seemed like she was just scared of him. He preffers human attention, he probably thinks hes human because all he wants to do is hang out on my shoulder. Now probably 4 weeks later they do not fight but simply avoid each other.

My options as i see them are like this, seperate cage or same cage, remember they dont fight just avoid each other, and its mostly because he wants a humans attention.

Her age is undetermined, she may be 3 years old, hes only one, is that a determining factor when breeding birds?

Thank you

Re: Male and female gcc conures dont get along

Rght now they are both in the females cage, the door is closed, i feel like its a soap opera, so far it looks like its working. We are watching a scary movie, so maybe it will put them in the right mood to get close and cuddle

Re: Male and female gcc conures dont get along

Firslty, Welcome to the forum

Its not a good idea to 'force' them to interact by putting them in the same cage (they are obviously stressed and uncomfortable with eachother). You really need to let them interact on there own terms and in neutral territory. Do you have a play stand or some location that neither of them 'own', where they could learn to interact? How long have you had both of them? A relationship may take a long time to form. If biting and aggression is occuring please seperate them before more damage is done. Chances are if you let this happen for too long, they may never become a good breeding pair.

Also, before even considering breeding them PLEASE do your research. Why do you want to breed them? I'm not trying to be harsh and crush your dreams or anything, but here is a good list of questions that another member (Ratzy) of this forum wrote up that i think any person considering breeding birds should ask themselves (I hope you don't mind me re-posting this, thanks Ratzy):

1# How big is the cage?
2# How long have you had the birds?
3# Do you know how old they are?
4# Are you sure of their genders?
5# Can you post a picture of your set up?
6# What is their diet?
7# Have they bred before?
8# Have you any knowledge in caring for chicks and eggs?
9# Do you have homes lined up for any future babies?
10# Why are you wanting to breed them?
11# Are you sure they are in condition?
12# Do they have any medical problems that you are aware of?
13# Why is the nest box on the bottom of the cage?!
14# Are you prepared to hand rear?
15# Are you prepared to LOSE your birds?
16# Are you knowledgeable in the area of egg binding and infertility?
17# Do you have any other budgies?
18# What is the amount of lighting?
19# Are they inside or outside?
20# Is there any current activity ( building works ect.) near the cage?
21# Are you prepared to pay $500+ for an emergency?
22# Do you have enough room for the future babies while they fledge?

You may have answers for all this, but i did need to check. Breeding birds of any kind is a huge commitment and should not be taken lightly.

Re: Male and female gcc conures dont get along

I want to breed so that I will have more birds, The male has a very strong personality and would love to duplicate him. Do not worry they do not fight, she is submissive to him, stays out of his way, however it is getting better, I think the issue is he has never been with his own kind, he was hand raised since he was born by an old lady (old owner) I bought him so he can make babies with mine, so now it seems like he thinks he's too good for her and wants to stay with me all the time. They have been together for maybe a month, they started to avoid each other so I simply decieded to put them together in the same cage. When I come home he climbs on the cage almost begging to let him out. And she sits on her perch fluffed up comfy. I dont keep them free to roam around, I just thought a few hours in the same cage a day would help their relationship.

I don't know, it sounds like they aren't doing so hot with one another. You have to gently introduce them, not shove them in the same cage together all day. Forcing anything is not going to get anything done.

Re: Male and female gcc conures dont get along

Im not sure how long the introduction process takes, they've known each other for a month and a half now. I guess with parrots first impression is the most important and that didn't go well, I stopped putting them in the same cage, I have closed her cage now except for a little opening so that if she wants she can get out, but he is left outside maybe wanting to get in. He loves humans too much, he's awesome but he aint no baby maker yet, Ill post videos of him, he's great as a pet. Like a little toy that wants in your mouth.

Re: Male and female gcc conures dont get along

Sometimes it can take a while, you know? Not all birds click right away. I knew it took a long time when my aunt got her cockatiel a mate. He used to nip at the female and show dominance. Then, finally they mated, this was like months down the road though. Patience is a virtue.

That makes me feel better, btw i stopped putting them in the same cage, I dont document what they do all day, mostly stay away from each other but let me check what they are doing now... staying away from each other, lol
