Met a Patagonian...

And fell in love with him! After we got Sage, my husband and I agreed we wouldn't add another bird until we bought our own house. Well...we just bought our first house

We're still in the process of moving/settling in and are by no means in a hurry, but have gotten more serious about looking for our next addition. Hubby seems pretty set on an RB2, but with the eclectic mix I take care of already, I'm open to anything I fall in love with.

I've heard of Patagonians, but have never met one. First impression...HUGE! Seriously big conure. And beautiful. Love the eyes. Definitely has a voice, but was surprisingly quiet. The store has a rescue associated with it and he's one of the rescues, but seemed to be a pretty friendly little guy. Came right up to me, very affectionate, sweet bird. Like I said, not in a hurry, but if he's still there in the next few weeks, I might get too tempted

I fostered a Patty named Cleo - short for Cleopatra.... (the eyes of course)

BIG TIME personalities. Pretty goofy birds. Semi-nocturnal. Big feet because they're cliff dwellers.

Just out of curiosity, any idea what they normally sell for? Did a quick Google search and didn't really find anything. They didn't have a fee listed on his tag and I didn't bother to ask.

I'm so jealous but goodluck if you do get him, they're meant to be very loud (don't let that stop you though).

Actually Patties generally aren't terribly expensive. $600.-ish for babies...

Less for rehomes.

He definitely had some pipes on him, but was rather quiet. Noise doesn't bother me, I can tune it out. My husband? Not so much...lol

Actually Patties generally aren't terribly expensive. $600.-ish for babies...

Less for rehomes.

Ha! That's what I was afraid of. I was guessing they'd be quite a bit more.

Musical they are not. Not great talkers either BUT FANTASTIC TRICK BIRDS...

I taught Cleo to bowl, to skateboard, to play basketball, and to fly to me.

And they're GOOFY birds... CONURE/MACAW goofy.

He definitely left an impression on me, but for no apparent reason, hubby says he's not a conure fan (though he's never even interacted with one...)

I've never personally had a conure and have had pretty minimal experience with them, but I think the right one would be a great, practical match for us.

What a beauty! I haven't ever seen one in person, how big are they compared to a Sun?
Conures are my personal favourites of all

I'd say he was about twice the size of a sun. I'm no conure expert, but I think Patagonians are the largest. If he's still there the next time I go back, maybe that will be my argument for my husband. More to love

Second largest - GOLDEN (QOB) are the largest.

And conures are, essentially, shrunken macaws....

very closely related, pair bond birds, same basic behaviors.

Really?! I met a few QOBs a while back and for some reason he seemed a little bigger to me. Maybe he's just a fatty.

I'm game to enter the conure world. I think Nick just thinks they're too common and boring, which I find funny seeing as this is the only Patagonian I've ever seen in my life. I know he just thinks of GCC and suns when he thinks of conures and has zero interest in either. When I asked him why he said, "Cause everyone has those!" Yeah, he's one of those...

Patagonian's aren't common, least they arent in the UK. There are add's about them, normally rehomes but very very very few compared to the common conures.
Also I was in the understanding that Patagonian's were the largest conure?

There is a lesser and greater Patigonian. I've seen I think the lessers before at bird stores. Still they were noticeably larger than a sun.

Welllllllllllllll... I love my 30-year-old Pati... but I will say: he is super loud, destructive, and demanding, and I believe this is typical for the species. But he is the funniest, most devoted little monster you could ever love. They're a handful... but to me, worth it!

He's about 19 inches long, beak to tail. Yes, he is a Lesser... the Greater is much the same in appearance but with a wider, whiter "necklace", and closer to 25 or 30 inches, and rarely in captivity.

I was able 2 handle 1 for about 15 minutes. he was a snuggler for sure. A lot bigger then a sun conure. The coloring at first looks dull but when the sun hits it they have a lot of subtle coloring. This one was very tame and could be handled by anyone. He would snuggle his head into my shirt and jacket and accept scratchies on his head and neck. he was a very nice parrot. And they are kind of rare.

His coloration is subtle, but yes, in sunlight, his shoulders are a vibrant bronze-green, his belly is fire-orange, and his flight feathers are a neon turquoise!
And definitely a snuggler!
One thing I have read and heard and witnessed quite a few times is that Patis, Greys and Cockatoos are the most vulnerable to plucking if stressed or ignored... doesn't sound as if that would be an issue HERE!
