"Birdie". Sun Conure
I just noticed that A LOT more people are on the Conure species site than any other. I'm sort of tired of the bad rap they get about noise. Yes, they are loud, but not nearly as loud as a Cockatoo and a lot less trouble. And they make that loud calling sound for a reason. It makes me happy when I arrive home from an errand and Screech is calling for me. Or when I wake up in the morning and take the cover off his cage. What's the big deal? He stops when he realizes it's not time to come out yet, or I take him out of his cage. To me, it's a happy sound. Like, hey.....don't forget about me over here! He also calls out when someone comes to the door, or a new person walks into the room...like "Welcome!" Not an apartment bird for sure, but I'd say 3 or 4 times a day, they sound off for one reason or another....no big deal for me. :orange:

People act like cats and dogs don't make just as much noise as a bird. *rolls eyes* I have a friend whose dog will never stop barking. Easily just as annoying as a noisy bird.

I think the only time my bird's calls annoy me is when I'm trying to sleep. But I've gotten pretty good at tuning it out, lol.

I'd actually consider the smaller conure species the best suited for apartments to be honest! They're extraordinarily quiet in vocalizations in comparison to most birds. It's the Aratinga species that are very loud and perhaps not the best suited for apartments versus say the Pyrrhura species (considering that these two species are the most common).

I'm not sure why people in general would consider that conures have a bad rep either, especially when you take note that they're one of the most popularly suggested "first bird" alongside cockatiels. I'm certainly looking forward to another 20+ years with my conure, that's for sure [emoji4]

My conure was my "first bird" and I think he is just AWESOME! Not loud at all... he has all these cutsie sounds he makes for various situations - the only real loud one is when he sees something threatening and calls very loudly (hard to imagine such a sound from such a small creature) whilst flying around at top speed!! It is his feathery way of saying "Hey - watch out". I think it is adorable! They have such enormous personalities.. actually scary sometimes!

I completely agree, I LOVE conures! They have become my very favourites in the parrot world, and I would love to have an entire room filled with them:)

I promise you, my dogs don't make even nearly as much ruckus as my flock. :D

Lol Amen Sister!!!

I always wanted a Sun conure....but then I heard one. I can handle the constant noise of an IRN and yell of my RB2 far more than I can handle the conure....but then I struggle with a flock of budgies, go figure!

I did agree to my daughter getting a maroon bellied conure however, but she ended up settling on a wee lovebird. If I had more space, more time...they'd be on my list of top ten, but then there's the African Grey, the quaker... you get my drift.

We're lucky to live with such a choice - for those committed to aviculture, there really is something out there for everyone :)

Ruby - Sun Conure - 8 years
My Sun is a nightmare. I love her, but sometimes when strangers are over and she screams, my ears start to ring! I've gotten used to the noise though, and couldn't imagine my home without her constant screeching.

It's all very worth it though, I wouldn't give her up for the world! Ruby is my first bird, and when I bought her, I didn't know what I was up for. I'd recommend a Sun Conure to just about anyone! They're amazing birds and surprisingly good flyers. :)

Green cheek conure named Hero
We have a gcc named hero and he's not loud at all! We spend quite a bit of time with him and his screech is very soft so maybe it just depends on the bird.

Sun conure, black capped conure, yellow sided conure, and a turquoise IRN
We have 3, a sun, black capped and yellow sided GCC. The noise level is NOTHING in comparison to the U2 we had. I suppose anything would seem quiet after that.

My house sounds a bit like a rain forest, random calls and shrieks, but I find it soothing, so much so that if I need a nap I can nap in the same room with them.

We never cover cages, just close blinds and lights out.

BUT...My oldest is just 1 year old, the other two are 6 and 7 months. The noise level may be because they have not reached sexual maturity yet? (Even though watching the one year old leads me to believe she's getting there...)

I have three small birds and three dogs. When the dogs get going they are worse that the birds by far.
