Help plz

Good Afternoon, Yesturday I went to one of my local private owned petstore to buy a cockiel but however I came out the shop with a Green Cheek Conure .I am worried as I was doing my research I saw chlorine isn't good for birds is that true does it harm them. The conure is 4 months old and I would like advise on trying to get the conure to speak.I have kept parakeets the ones they call budgies.I would also like any advise on how to take care of the animal as best from more experienced keepers .I have kept black birds, droves and even chickens as well as my dad was a farmer. I brought food for it, vitmins for the water, going to get toys today, I have a cage that's okay for it right now but I will upgrade when it grows and I have some food thing to wear its break . Anything else I need

Chlorine is bad for every living thing, and bird especially. Why the concern about chlorine? Feed your GCC on pellets ( there are many dif kinds) and greens and sweet potato cooked and carrots and pea and read up on this board about GGC care.

Conures are not known to be good talkers, they generally have very tiny voices and can be garbled (at least GCC do)

Definately a pellet diet and fresh veggies with fruit occassionally.

My conures shred paper but are not real interested in other toys. Upgrade the cage now rather than later, they really need all the room they can get.

You can upgrade to a bigger cage now because that baby bird is not going to get any bigger really....maybe heavier, but not bigger. They are small parrots. Give him a few toys and lots,of attention, a good pellet diet, not much seed and lots of fruit and veggies. And of course no chlorine bleach. Are you talking about cleaning the cage? Dawn soap and water will do fine.

I meant tap water .I got worried because i heard chlorine isnt good .Can i use my water conditioner to remove it if it not good for them

Tap water will gas off the chlorine in a very short period of time.

I use bottled water just to be safe. But he bathes in tap water. I think your water purifier will do fine. Some refrigerators have purified water built in.

Yea thx guys i really want the best for the little guy going to petco to get the little guy toys and the wood things that bkrds rest on. I WILL REFUSE TO BUY ANY ANIMAL FROM PETCO ESPECIALLY BIRDS.

My green cheek played with lots of different toys (chewing leather, bells - make sure they're safe -, balsa wood, paper, cardboard, beads, plastic balls, etc), put in a few and rotate them on occasion. Pellets and veggies (with some fruit treats - especially berries). Lots of attention. They are stubborn parrots but ours responded well to training, especially with small almond bits as rewards. He was a great bird, we loved our years with him. Enjoy your conure!

I love GCC voices! Ours murmured and it was so cute. He potty trained easily and wasn't loud at all.

You can let the water sit overnight to evaporate the chlorine. I asked my avian vet about this. We use filtered water.

I would NOT use the water conditioner until you verify with your avian vet (or call any avian vet if you don't have one yet and they can tell you).

As for anything else: LOTS OF TOYS they are little busy bodies and I would recommend online Doctors Foster and Smith (great prices, you can read reviews, huge variety). You can even buy food on there too. I recommend Harrisons pellets or Goldenfeast pellets plus fresh fruits and veggies (NO pits from anything, NO avocado, NO coffee/caffeine/soda, absolutely NO alcohol - I know it's weird to even say but some people do allow small sips and it causes severe liver damage quickly because bird livers cannot process alcohol like humans).

Be sure to read about dangerous toys and household items (mainly NO teflon pots, pans, steamers, heaters, etc. because it's toxic, NO oven liners or using self clean, it will kill them. Also no harsh chemicals or sprays such as lysol, febreeze plugins, etc, and also candles and cooking near your bird are very dangerous). Also it's good to get in the habit of keeping toilet lids down because birds can get in to bathe and drown.

Hey guys I face a next problem.Converting my GCC rom eatting seeds to eatting pellets.I have added water into the mix to put the two together but the GCC just seems to go nuts for the seeds especially the the sun flower seeds.What should I do?

I'm going though this process at the minute with my two one really likes them and the other isn't intrested. Harrisons sent me an information booklet out and in there it says,
Weaning the bird off its old diet. Offer a small amount of the usual food in the morning for 1 hour and then remove this from the bowl. Replace with harrisons giving less than will cover from the bottom of thier bowl, and make this the only food that is available to them during the main part of the day. The next day, give your bird seeds for only 30 minutes in the morning and evening. The third day reduce the time to 15 minutes twice a day. And finally, offer only harrisons on the fourth day.
My vet says just to put a layer of the pelets on top of the seed and keep reducing the amount of the seeds you put in until she is fully weaned of it.
