Hi everyone, I have a beautiful hand reared female Sun Conure. She is my world and is never shut in her cage. She even comes to the pub with me lol.

I have read that Sun Conures are quite noisy but apart from the odd squawk when I come in shes really quiet. She does chat away quietly when sat on my shoulder but thats it.

The only problem I have is shes so bloody nervous??

If I reach for her to put her on her cage she sqeeches and I'm sure my neighbours feel like calling RSPCB.

Is this common??

Also am I lucky to have such a quiet conure or will she start getting louder as she gets older??

Also can anyone help with toilet training??

Thanks, Steve

Get her trained to a harness first, like an Aviator Harness, or she will fly away one night.
Happens all the time - feathers grow back, without notice, and poof off she goes. Welcome, Steve , and have a good time here.

She has her wings clipped and I keep my eye on them. I took her to a big field to she wot she done and even if I put her down and walk away she just flies back to me :-D I have 3 different harnesses bust she hates them and I feel to guilty when I try and put them on her.

"She just flies back to me"? If she is flying.. Please read the thread " Lost my Maggie"
below. Marks macaw is flight trained and a good flier, but a puff of wind took her way...

Wrench is right Skeldon. You can't prepare for every single bad case scenario that could happen. Without a harness it's just a matter of time. Go on Facebook and check out parrot 911 and you will see how many parrots per day people lose. Your love for your bird is clear to see. We just don't want you to ever have to go through the pain of losing her. My sun conure is one and half years old. I have been harness training him for one year and the progress is extremely slow but there is progress. I would like nothing more than to take Moonie out with me everywhere I go, but I have to resist it.

The screening part usually only happens when they're left alone and want your attention. At least how that's my little guy is. If he's with you it's very very rare that he will scream. Sounds like your little girl is C
content:)

It took me maybe one week to toilet train Moonie. The way I did it is that I would watch for him to do the pre-poop movement which is usually a fluff up tail wag type thing. When I noticed that I would interrupt him and quickly walk over to his cage and put him on his cage. As soon as he did that movement again I would use a command such as go poop and when he did poop I would say "good" and reward him. I avoid using food as a reward because you don't want to over potty train them if you know what I mean. Like you don't want them to be perfectly potty trained that they would hold it in for a treat because that can cause damage to their cloaca. For a reward I would just pick him back up again. It took him about a week to catch on and I would say my mistake rate is maybe once every six months but that's usually my fault because I forget to take him for a bathroom break.

I hope this helps :)

I have a 14 month old Sun that is pretty laid back and quiet compared to most. I think we just got lucky! Sookie calls when I'm out of sight, but as soon as I talk to her from the other room she quiets right down. My little yellow side is my screamer! I do have 3 together, though, and I think that makes a huge difference in their behavior.

Sookie doesn't really like hands. She likes everything on her terms. If she is doing something wrong or it's time to go back in the cage and I reach for her, she shrieks and backs away. But, it's only because she doesn't want to be moved away from whatever she is tearing up, or doesn't want to go back in the cage. Interaction is mostly on her terms. It's fine for her to grab a cheeto and go down my shirt to eat it, but how dare I try to touch her when she's swinging from my glasses! (I told a few of my friends the other day that if I don't respond to their texts, they will know Sookie is out and I'm not allowed to wear my glasses, so I can't see to respond!)

I do agree with the harness! Imagine how devastated you would be if you lost her? I walked out to take out the trash one day with my bird on my shoulder, wings clipped but could still fly somewhat. I had been outside with her a million times. A flock of birds flew over and she was gone. It broke my heart, and it was my fault. I sat out in the yard all night waiting for her to come back She did come near, but bats were swooping under the security light and kept scaring her off. It breaks my heart when I see someone posting desperately trying to find their bird when it didn't have to happen to start with.
