"Birdie". Sun Conure
This little bird has taken over our lives, dogs and all. She is very rarely happy playing alone even if she can see us thru sliding glass. F doors. She has a huge screened porch full of play gyms and toys. She's fully flighted, so she can fly all over the porch and this porch runs the width od the whole house. Mostly, I sit out there with the computer, or books, but I have errands and other things to do like take the dogs to the park, etc. I'm afraid she thinks of me and my husband as flock mates. She loves us both equally. We've had her for 4 short months and it seems like we've had her forever. She eats every meal with us, watches TV with us, etc. I do want her to know she's a bird. She sees plenty of wild birds throughout the day and mimics the crazy mockingbirds. But I'm thinking she might need a bird friend. We certainly don't need another bird, but maybe she does??? I don't know. Would it be best to get another Sun, or would a similar sized parrot be okay. I certainly do not want to breed birds. Would it be better to wait (Screech is 8 months old) until she's older, or get,one now rather than later? And then who's to say they'll even get along, much less be a comfort to one another. What's the consensus?:orange:

Sounds normal. You are her flock. I just got a black capped conure and I am making sure I don't spoil him too much. He has to be happy sitting in him cage. I have 2 parakeets that stay in the same room as him. They don't interact with each other. I think they like being around each other. When Sprinkles takes a bath my female Parakeet trys to take a bath it is too cute. Sprinkles the Conure thinks the parakeets are crazy They keep him company. They are in separate cages but they don't ever feel alone.

Sounds like you have room for another bird. Would it help.... Yeah I think it would help. Birds are social animals and so when you are away at least the bird is not all alone. she will have another bird to talk with that is part of the flock. The wild birds outside are not part of the flock and do not count. The wild birds are entertainment. I would not keep the 2 birds in the same cage.

IF I was you I would look on craigslist and give a bird in need a home. I see sun conures on there from time to time.

I also think a second bird would help... I just got a second tiel (because I felt bad for my first tiel who is a massive velcro bird he is ALWAYS wanting to sit on me and doesn't know how to keep himself occupied) and even though they definitely don't love each other... heck they don't even like each other lol... but they still keep each other company and love to eat together etc. :)

Ruby - Sun Conure - 8 years
Sounds very normal! Sounds like you have plenty of toys for her to play with! Maybe put some sun flower seeds inside some of the toys? Teach her to play with them? I know when I bought Ruby her first toy, she didn't know what it was. Fast forward a year and a half, she'll destroy it in seconds!! I'm thinking of getting a bird friend for my Sun, and I'm pretty sure they'll befriend any species! I think it would be a great idea to introduce one now while she's still relatively young, so she has time to adjust to the new addition. Maybe a green cheek conure if you're into smaller sized birds.

I agree with snowflake311. A rescued bird is an amazing experience! There's also some sun conures there as people can't tolerate their loud noises. Having a rescue bird gives the rescued bird a second chance at life :)

Best of luck!!

Sunnies are velcro birds, no doubt about it. They are about as close to a cockatoo as you can get as far as temperament and personality go. They're loud, expressive and require a LOT of time and socialization. Sunnies also become very protective and attached to their owners.

I think that while a second bird will likely decrease the attachment, it may also affect your bond. How much depends on the bird as well as the new addition. There is also a chance an addition may not work out as you plan. So it is a risk.

Ultimately, it boils down to how much time you are able to spend with your bird.

I second that! I think a GCC wold be a fantastic second addition.. they are quieter than a sun conure and such cute little clowns.... a recuse bird would also be AWESOME and would feel great helping a lil' bird in need of a good home =)

I just got a second bird recently and it was the best decision ever!... and I had serious doubts but I made right decision :D
