So Gus Gus has a portion of beak that looks like it broke off right near his nares.. he has a habit of scratching his beak on edges and stuff and is constantly buffering on perches and what not but this doesn't seem normal to me. Should I take him to the vet?

I think I would just to be sure that Gus is OK. Also a little concerned that his beak is not very smooth looking and in the absence of anyone who is an owner chipping in think it could be diet related. My advice in a nutshell is see your AV have the check over and ask the right questions IMO.

i took away his bell that he used to scratch his beak there :( im just wondering now if this whole time he's had a beak issue that led to him compulsively scratching his beak... you can see the tissue under where the beak is supposed to be but it still looks fairly healthy ...

Let us know how it goes with the AV and obviously if we can help further do not hesitate to post again. Good luck with Gus.

There is clear separation (loss) of a 'layer' of the beak. This type of break can and normally does grow back.

The general condition of the beak is moderate and shows signs of rubbing against an uneven, sharp, and/or ruff surface. And as a result, there is a high likelihood that a layer has been broken away because of that action. This does and can happen, but with the compulsive rubbing there is a possibility that there is an underlying issue that is driving that behavior.

The ongoing beak rubbing can result in sections of the beak rubbed or broken fully away. And, clearly that should be avoided.

As stated, double check your parrot's 'actual' diet, what is actually being eaten. Assure that you are providing a 'well balanced' diet!

I fully agree that an AV appointment is next step. Yes, a good look at the beak, but more importantly, targeting the compulsive rubbing.

yeah he avoids his cuttle bone and the other things like that and uses his perches instead for his beak rubbing habits... thank you so much SailBoat for the input!! maybe a new perch situation might be helpful in general :\ he's a super picky eater too-- mostly regular seed and sunflower seeds and the occasional peanut-- he refuses any fruit or vegetable

So I took him to the vet and he said that it's not an open wound but that I need to take his bells away (that he scratches his beak with)... gus was mad at me until i said sorry!! (which i thought was kinda cute too) but the vet buffered his beak a bit to even it up and now I'm just giving his beak special attention when we're snuggling.. my fingernails won't do the same damage as the bell O_O

Did the vet do any tests at all???

With that much rubbing, I would guess a possible sinus infection.

And yes, beak is also diet related, in a sense. A diet that is too dry and/or lacking in important nutrition can lead to a cracking beak. It will peel in layers.

I highly suggest getting your jenday to eat healthier! Have you tried feeding pellets at all??? Or what about sprouted seeds? How have you tried getting him to eat healthier? These threads may be of help to you. :)

Take a look at the threads I linked to.

The majority of my birds are rehomes, and I've taken in several that were not on a healthy diet at all. One hen was eating wild bird seed because that's all the family was willing to buy her. I have one bird that is also wild caught at who knows what age.

I understand picky, in fact my pickiest bird is a conure! But despite being picky, he still eats a varied diet! As do all the others!
