Hi all this is my bird baby Loki, he was hatched 01/16 and i adopted him 0/16.
i never knew i could love a bird as much as i love this little brat.

Right now Loki is molting and wont let me near any of his pin feathers to check them so i haven't been able to help him with the ones that are out of reach and i fear for my fingers when i try, Anyone have any advice as to how i can help him? Will i know when hes ready for me to help? are they just to sensitive right now to be touched?

Thanks!
Jenn

What a cutie baby <3 ! Is he Yellow Sided?

I think it depends on the bird. My GCC Kermit has a few pinnies but he lets me pet him gently in the area and appreciates when I move em around a bit. I don't trust myself to break the sheathe though because my nails are too short. I think the most you can do is just try and build trust with the sweet babe. Let him eat from your hands, see if you can teach him a few tricks, etc. He'll be cuddly again in his own time c:

When I would touch only the tip of the sheath and roll it in my fingers, it would break off into little powdery pieces. If they're sensitive and she fusses to touch the tips, they are probably still too new.

I dont know if he is yellow sided, i was told he was a white eared conure, but i never really believed that. From the pictures I've seen of white eared conures theres a much darker cap with a more maroon colored belly.

I just googled the yellow sided and that looks like my loki though.

Either someone doesn't know what they have, or someone was trying to scam you.

I 'know' someone who bought a green cheek conure. Sometime after having her, people said that she (the conure) wasn't a green cheek, but probably a maroon bellied x green cheek hybrid. Well, at about 13 years old, it was finally determined that the conure was a maroon bellied conure, not a green cheek, nor a hybrid! :D

Loki definitely looks like an opaline ("yellowsided") green cheek conure!

Also, you might try giving him daily bathes, or multiple bathes a day to help with those pin feathers! It'll help to soften them a little and make them less itchy! ;) See if he likes water in a bowl, a spray bath, a spray bath with a planter, a bowl of ice water, a bowl of water with toys/fruits/vegetables, maybe even try leaving a dish of water out while running the vacuum? Or try playing some music of rain? Or other birds bathing?

Blue Fronted Amazon, Cookie..Sun Conure..lil Booger (RIP) Have owned Parakeets, lovebirds, cockatiels, cockatoos, pocket parrot, and quakers.
Bingo on the spray mist... it makes it easier for them to loosen up. Until I got a second bird I did all the pin feather/preening on my BFA...always kept my thumbnail and lil fingernail long so I could use it like a beak. My BFA taught me the right way to do it so it didn't hurt... careful not too twist the pin feather, just gentle pinch/pull moves.. if I twisted he let me know painfully quick. With the addition of a lil Sun Conure... Booger... he took my job.... Cookie nor Booger have had a pin feather since.

Hey! Welcome to the forum! I don't really know about your question but I was wondering, does he have his wings clipped or is he so bonded that he won't fly away? My GCC is three mo. old, I've had him 6 weeks but I would'nt trust him outside yet!

Please, forget the word,,yet!
Never ever trust your baby outside unrestrained! Bonding has nothing to do with it, they spook, they fly up! Want to come back, but don't know how! Terrifying for you, death for your baby!
Also, a hawk will snatch him in an instant!
Even if clipped, major risks!

My vet tells me that when they clipped his wings they clipped to many feathers so he doesn't get very far even when he tries to fly from his cage to me so i do take him out right now but only on days where there's no wind and for short periods.

An adrenaline spike can completely change that....
