Can you teach an adult conure to talk?

I have a yellow sided GCC, he was a rescue bird and i've had him for a couple months, hes starting to warm up to us a little. He's finally willing to come out of his cage, but only to stand on top of it. He really only makes one sound right now, which is a loud screaming sound if everybody leaves the room and hes alone, or if everybody is sleeping and he wants us awake. We were told he is 2 years old but i have no way to confirm this. Anyways, is it possible for him to learn to talk? If so, is it likely?

First of all, thank you for rescuing him!

If he's warming up, and seems in good health, well... 2 years is still a young bird. I think Green Cheeks hit sexual maturity between 1-3 years, and that is often a time of increased social interest and bonding and such. Keep loving and watching and treating...

My conure continues to learn words and sounds at 32 years. Watch him sing J-Lo's"Booty" if you want a laugh (in his movie below).

I'd be optimistic.

And again, thank you for giving a wonderful little guy another chance at happiness.

"Fly free, little ones. Love and miss you."
It took my rescue blue crown Rosco about a year or so to start talking. I have no clue how old he is but he was a mature bird when I adopted him. Maybe between 5 and 10 according to the vet who did his initial exam. He does not have a large vocabulary but he sure loves to ask, "Whatchya doin, birrrrrrrrrrrrd?" I would say that there is a good chance your GCC will get chatty with a lot of love, attention and time to decide he wants to talk. But he might not every utter a syllable such as in the case of my 30+ year old blue crown Tootsie. Does not lessen how special she is one bit, though.

JamesC... you have a 30-year-plus conure, too? And I love Blue Crowns. I'd LOVE to hear/see more about him. Might help Fiji, too? :)

Blue Fronted Amazon, Cookie..Sun Conure..lil Booger (RIP) Have owned Parakeets, lovebirds, cockatiels, cockatoos, pocket parrot, and quakers.
Great you took in a rescue bird and gave him a loving home. I too am a sucker for rescue birds and of all the birds I own or have ever owned Ive only ever bought 1. My most recent rescue is a lil Sun Conure.. Still a somewhat "teenager" but had never uttered a word... a few weeks after I got him he got "bye bye" and "wanna go nite nite" pretty quick. He is now working on counting 1-5. Vocalizing when fingers are held up... just not getting the right sound yet, but its coming along. Keep stuff simple.. at the right times... like I do and they can potentially catch on quick. When I grab my keys I said bye bye.. so he only says bye bye when he hear/sees me grab my keys. He says "wannagonitenite" when HE is ready to go to bed... putting himself in the cage. He only counts when I hold up my fingers... Keep words and phrases simple...and repetitive... that gives you the best chance. Birds learn just like kids and can understand what words mean even if they don't say them themselves. Good luck... and thanks again for having a heart in the right place.
