My very first bird is a Green Cheeked Conure!
Hi guys! From the other threads on the forum, I've learned that not all GCC's talk, whether they're unable or just don't want to. Cricket hasn't said anything discernible, though he does do a call that is similar to his name; "CRI-keh!" (but really fast). I don't know exactly how old he is; probably about a year or a bit older than that.

My point is, is it too late for him to pick up on words?
He also doesn't imitate anything yet, he just chirps and shrieks. Granted, he's only been with me for about a month and a half now, so maybe that's not enough time?

P.S. It won't break my heart if it's too late or he just doesn't talk at all; I'm really just curious. Besides, I talk enough for the both of us. XD

Does he do any of the mumbling mixed in with chirps and squeaks? EB is doing a lot of mumbling, then words have just started popping out. Today when I set her on the shower rod she she said step up, that's a first. Also, not super clear. I know more from the intonation syllables and context.

Ehhhhhh, he grumbles, kind of like two pebbles being rubbed together, but it's mostly squeaks and trills. He also quacks. I've seen a few videos of GCC's talking, and I've noticed that it's really, really unclear. That's why I'm suspicious of his "Cricket" call.

Green Cheek talking is like a 1 year old child talking. Sometimes only the mother can really understand them.

My little guy has been trying to say "Step up" since the first week I took him home. His little voice is not that clear but I can tell what he is trying to say. He is still young so in time he will perfect his human calls. Now he says "hey baby" and "hey bird" again it is not clear but you can tell what he is trying to say.

My aunt has a 20+ year old Green cheek who has a wisper sounding voice it is really cute and you can hear what she is saying.

Awww! That's adorable! And good way to put it. XD I'll keep working with Cricket, then. :)

Blue Fronted Amazon, Cookie..Sun Conure..lil Booger (RIP) Have owned Parakeets, lovebirds, cockatiels, cockatoos, pocket parrot, and quakers.
I don't think its ever too late really. When I got Booger he was perhaps a year old and had never spoken a word. Inside of 2 weeks he started saying "wanna go nite nite" when it was bedtime... which of course is exactly what I say when putting them to bed EVERY nite. Its progressed to "bye bye" when he knows either the wife or I am leaving the house...and most recently he started referring to my wife as "Momma". He is trying to say other things as well... mostly just raspy garbled conversation but hes working on it. Just be patient and consistent.

Two green cheek conures, one sun conure, and two quakers.
I don't know if any gcc really talks legible. I noticed some videos on YouTube have subtitles so others know what they're saying. My gcc says, "good boy, What'cha doin, yes, I love you," and I'm thinking he's imitating "brat" when he bites me. Lol. Oh, also, "stop that".

My JoJo is a big talker..but.. My daughter and wife understand him, me, nope! But his range of sounds are awesome! Does a blender, dog's squeak toy, floor scrape sound, keurig sound! Trying to learn how to whistle along with me(sounds like an asthmatic )!

Auri - Pineapple GCC
Auri says her own name pretty often - when she's trying to get my attention from inside her cage - and "cutiepie" on occasion. Her own name comes out quick and pebbly, kinda like "Ollie"(she's 4mo old btw)

"Cutiepie" is even harder to discern, but it mimics my timing and tone so I'm quite sure it's what she's trying to say.

I think it's really cute when she tries to mimic words, but I find all her other sounds adorable also :D

She quacks - this seems to be her 'curious' sound when she's exploring or beaking new objects, and she has a similar but distinctly different quacking sound when she's trying to be cheeky like refusing a step-up command. There's a 'whimper' (low chirp/trill) when she flies and lands in an unknown spot on the floor, or when i leave for work in the morning or cover her up at night. She has her standard happy/affirmative sound, which is when I come back from work, when she's being active all over my shirt, or ask her if she wants a treat (nutriberry). She also has a high pitched adorable scream/call which is her SUPER happy sound (though it's fairly loud), usually when there's running water as she loves baths, and when i play the piano. She then proceeds to jump on the keyboard and rub herself all over it. Like she rolls over and preens herself.

Thanks, all! We'll keep working at it. I heard him muttering in his cage the other night and I was so excited. XD I'll keep you updated!
