Jazz, our Sun, is 15 and was a breeder his whole life until shortly before joining our family. He has been with us since March, and is terrified of hands. He has been curious about us, but really shies away from contact. We decided to let him come to us on his own.
Tonight, I had put Spike back in his cage and had just sat down after changing papers, when I hear flapping, and Jazz flew over and landed on my shoulder. I just talked softly to him, and he sat there for about 15 minutes before going back to his cage. I knew he may decide to bite me , but decided that if he could try trusting me, I could do the same with him. No bites, he just sat there.
I am thrilled! This was a giant step for him, and it made me cry with happiness after he was back on his cage.
This was a great day:)

All that Jazz...I LOVE that!
He was so proud of himself, but was on overload after going back to his cage.

I love it. When they start to trust is amazing. Sunny and I are working on it. Thanks for sharing! I needed a bit of hope today.

That's awesome! I'm so glad he's trusting you like that!

...And from now on, whenever I hear anything about Jazz, "And All That Jazz" WILL be playing in my head. I think your bird has a new theme song, lol.

Sweet! Terr, this is amazing! There are many things our birds can do to touch and outright amaze us. But honestly, precious few compare to the feeling when a fearful bird first takes that leap of faith and decides to trust you.

I'm so happy for you and Jazz both, my friend.

You and Sunny will get there! I'm so glad Jazz's progress made you feel hopeful on a low day:)

I am so glad too, Mitch, and I was really shocked. And now that song will also be in my head every time I talk to him..lol

So true, HT...the only thing I can compare to that is when a bird who was punished with water actually enjoys their first bath. That is an incredible felling as well:)

April, I so hope so! This morning he actually took a treat from me while on top of his cage...he has always run into his cage so he could take it through the bars. Baby steps for most, but I know how much courage it is taking him to make these steps:)

Thank you Al, I think it is the first time he has ever even wanted to try to trust someone, and I feel so incredibly lucky that it was me he chose to take a chance on.

That's awesome Terry! I'm so happy for you and Jazz!

Sounds like patience has paid off. I've noticed with Skitty, that sunnies love to initiate interaction, but don't like it forced on them. I think you are doing great in allowing it to happen naturally. Not only is it more likely to be successful, but IMO its also more meaningful.

Congrats! Soon he will be telling you what shows you are allowed to watch, which people are allowed to come over etc. haha

Thank you so much! I agree, it is so meaningful that he chose this, rather than me choosing to compel him to do it. I honestly feel that Jazz making this choice is one of the most rewarding experiences I have ever known.

Ha! He can choose my shows as long as Walking Dead is one of them:)

The circumstances that led me to Skittles is the most rewarding for me.

Skittles likes to watch Bar Rescue- I think he just likes listening to Jon Taffer scream.

Do you mind sharing how he joined your family? I'd love to hear:)

Likes hearing Jon Taffer scream, that is hysterical.

You mean you haven't heard the story? It's the greatest story ever told!

I had actually been saving up to buy a new computer. I kept putting it off, and putting it off because every time I would find one that I liked I just couldn't buy it and I just assumed it was indecision. I'd get to the checkout and give up. Then out of the blue I went and bought a stainless steel cookware set and got rid of my teflon set.

A few months later, still being unable to commit to a new pc, I was walking through the mall with a friend of mine. I always liked to go into the pet store and say hi to the birdies. I went there one Thursday and there was a sun conure in a large aviary cage near the front of the store. He was by himself. I walked up to him and he climbed down to the bottom of the cage and walked toward me, he started hopping up and down with excitement, something I had never seen before. A lady walking nearby heard my reaction and walked over, so my friend and I stepped back so the lady could see the bird. He climbed back up on his perch and proceeded to preen himself and ignore her. She made a snide remark ("why is it always the pretty ones that have no personality"). Then she left. I walked back toward him and he came right back down and started hopping again and then did some rollovers. He was clearly trying to get my attention. I wanted to buy him then and there but the clerk talked me out of it, go figure. He told me how loud they are and how much attention they need. So I talked with my friend and she told me to think about it over the weekend and do some research. So I did. But for the next four days I couldn't get that sunnie out of my head and first thing Monday I called and they still had him and I had them put him on hold. Then I went and got his cage, all his supplies got it all setup and then went and got him.

I still have this image in my head of his face when I was taking him home, I kept peeking through the box they put him in. He looked so happy!
