I've been following the posts on this forum for nearly two years and have learned from others. I've been of the fence about bringing a Conure into my life until Monday. Brought home a 5 mo. old GCC. He's hand shy. Has settled into a routine of eating, plating and makes little Conure skreeches and clucks. tried

I have a number of questions. The first is about diet. He had no problem finding the NuPreem fruit blend and spray Millet. I tried putting out pears but he didn't go for it. Tried some Kaytee mango and nut treats with the same results. Eventually he will have to eat something else.

I've been trying to get him to step up but as said before he's hand shy and he's molting. The lady at the pet store mentioned that he had a
bad experience with one of the employees at the store who was not aware of how sensitive pin feathers are.

He responses to my whistles and appears to want to come out of the cage. He's like a child that is afraid of the water. I should mention he is not flighted. I don't want to set him back. Should I allow this before he learns to step up?

After six days am I expecting too much?

Yes you are expecting too much from him after 6 days. I would find a thread about clicker training and do that with him and you will find foods that he likes just try all different kinds of things. My birds adore grapes so maybe try that.

Congratulations on your new baby! He is still settling in, and I would just give him a little time. With some of our more timid ones, we have just sat by the cage and talked quietly to them, letting them explore on their own. If someone hurt him doing pin feathers he is probably extra nervous now so it may take a bit longer.
My conures love cauliflower, bell peppers, apples, grapes, blackberries and broccoli. For treats, some like safflower seeds, others like pine nuts. Mine get Tropican and Zupreem pellets mixed with Tropimix (small parrot size).
Do you have any pictures to share yet? I'm so excited for you!

Hi and welcome! When your bird does acclimate and start to bond you'll be surprised at the amount of and various foods he will eat. With fresh fruit and veggies I think the best thing is to let them see you snack on the same things you are offering.

Congratulations! What a cute baby! A little more time to adjust and he should become very curious about all kinds of foods. There's an advantage with young birds, they are far more accepting of new foods than adults that have never had the chance to eat fresh food. Offer a big variety, you're little guy will reward you with good health.
