Hello, I was just wondering if I would be able to make a safe bed for skittles? I bought the cosy hut ages ago and then read a lot of stories about them chewing and choking on them :( but as it's getting to the winter here it can get a little chilly in my room especially first thing in the morning and I just wanted something that she could snuggle into if she wanted.

P.s i weighed her for the first time today and she came in at 63g, does that sound okay? She has a very nice and healthy diet consisting of pellets, a little bit of mixed seed and fruit and veg :)

Well, prior to a remake or DIY build, is skittles chewing on the current cosy hut? If your Parrot pays no attention to it, just continue to use it. However, if the cosy nut is in tatters because of all the chewing, its clearly time do something different.

Most Parrots can handle some variation in temperature. So, what is the variation that you are seeing. When the change is gradual, like the transition from Summer to Winder (the months of Fall). The will naturally build a thick lay of Downy feathers that will help them keep warmer.

I have tried the cosy hut yes, I was excited to see her snuggle into it but she just started picking bits of fluff off so I got too worried. I live in England so the weathers a bit all over the place but it's definitely dropped a lot in temperature.

As you well know, England's Winters can be very damp with periods below the point that water freezes. So, you're variation is out of where it would be comfortable for most companion Parrots. If you maintain temperatures that you are comfortable with your Parrot should do well. But if you are wearing sweaters in the house all day and you are running your home even cooler at night, a thick cage cover maybe a good idea.

Regarding the cosy hut. First keep any areas that she is picking at trimmed very short, check everyday! It may be possible for you to reuse the frame of your hut and use a heavier material to replace what is currently on it.

Thanks! Well I'm currently using one of my blankets to go over her cage, and she's been snuggling up on her calcium perch close to the blanket so i think she looks quite cosy there but I just can't HELP feel like I could provide a bit more. Just wish she wasn't such a nibbler and got into her cosy hut because I bet she'd love it :D I'll try trimming it but she really does tear away!

here is a radiant heat thingy you put inside the cage nexxt to a sleeping perch, heats to like 102F, your bird can get as close or far away as is comfortable. i personnaly dont like the huts.... too many stories. winter time I keep a reptile pad under the papers and grating in the cage, that and a heavy winter cover keep Salty nice n cozy.

I never got a hut before because of the horror stories. Reading your post, I wonder - what about sheepskin? The wool is really attached to the leather and just about impossible to pull out. It can be washed. You can probably get scraps from a leather place, look online/Ebay, or cut up an old mouton coat. I bought a nice mouton last week at the thrift store for six bucks. It's too nice to cut up, but I see them all the time. I would expect you could easily find some sheepskin in the UK, but if you have any problem pm me and I'll figure out how to send you a piece. If there are enough people interested I'll find a worn coat and cut it up.

I have a Cinnamon Green Cheek Conure named Kiwi and a dove named Squeakers that thinks parrots are stupid.

I use a rabbit pelt. Kiwi's avian vet gave it thumbs up :)
