Jenday Conure - Tempest (Hatch date 5-3-2016)
The holidays are almost upon us and I love to get my pets gifts as well. I'd like up upgrade my Jenday from the cage he's in. It's literally my old RAT cage; a 32"H x 17" D x 22" L cage with 1/4 inch spacing. It's not like it's not a bad size for him, but I'd like something that's more appropriate and easier to clean. This one has no slide out grate or floor grate for that matter. It also sits directly on the floor with no wheels. So I looked around Amazon and found a few I really liked with a decent price tag. The bad thing is the one I like the best has 1" spacing! I think that might be too big and that bums me out so much because it's an amazing cage! The other one is 5/8" inch spacing and is much smaller for only $10 less, not a good bargain. One of the comments on the 1" bar space cage says they have their Sun/Gold Cap mix in it and they are doing great, but I still worry because I've never tried such a large spacing. A lot of the other cages available that have a smaller bar spacing are much much smaller than what he's in already and cost hundreds of dollars, so that's a step backwards. Are there any large cages out there with smaller spacing for $200 or less? Craigslist and other such places are out of the question. I'm disabled and can't travel. I also live in the middle of nowhere and the areas with all the people selling things are dangerous high-crime areas, I'm not risking it for a cheap deal! Plus they are all hours away from me anyway.

This is the 1" spacing one: https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B00RYC77FS/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_S_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=11MTWM7CZ3T1T&coliid=I2GZNAM009P97M

I'm absolutely in love with this cage and it's the one I really want to get this one for him. I really doubt I will use the play top though, I might try using it as a desk top/floor stand instead, or maybe not at all.

And the smaller one with 5/8" spacing: https://smile.amazon.com/Large-Wrought-Parrot-Cockatoo-Mcage/dp/B00D7SOOE0/ref=pd_sbs_199_7?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=73Z7079SXEN7089XX7KM

This smaller one still looks nice, I like the dome top but I can't figure out how the door stays shut; my boy is great at figuring out simpler locks. I can't get over the price to size comparison when it comes to the other cage either.

Have you seen the Rainforest Valencia cage - it looks similar to the one you like and describes it being suitable?

Here is some info on what to look for, for a Jenday:_
While the largest cage you can manage is optimal, the minimum cage size for a Jenday Conure is 24″ W x 24″ D x 30″ H, with metal bars spaced no more than ½ inch apart. The best cage material is stainless steel, hands down. It is also the most expensive. Stainless steel is durable, rust proof, safe, and will last the life of your bird.
A secondary option, if stainless isn’t in your budget, is a steel cage treated with a non-toxic paint. The paint helps keep the metal in good condition. It is extremely important to make sure the paint is chip proof and non toxic. The last thing your Jenday wants to eat is paint, yet you can be certain they will beak the cage bars.

The right one is out there, keep looking.

You may find Craigslist worth checking, despite your well founded objections! You will most likely find parrot folks spread out in the rural areas also! Then tap a friend! Worth investigating!
Another option is to call around to all the pet shops, vets, and rescue centers. My wife scored a 50 gal tank for $5, new, cracked bottom, for my herps! And this was a petco! Ask for the manager when you call!

Also, double check me, but my research says you can go up to 3/4 spacing, Dr Foster's site says 7/8! Remember though, a screwup here and your baby can get killed!

My Jenday is in 3/4 bar spacing with no issues at all, but a lot depends on the size of your bird's head, too.
Did you see this cage? It is not very wide but is super long without the divider. It sounds like you would have to put something to cover up the space left with the divider out, but may be worth looking into. Lots of reviews to read, good and bad.

Rainforest Valencia Bird Cage ? Next Day Delivery Rainforest Valencia Bird Cage

This seems to be UK only. I cannot find any places that will ship to USA. I'm considering a smaller bird flight cage for the large size and small spacing, but they are so darn unattractive!

Is it there but under a different name? Anything here any good? Don't get me started on expensive, you wanna try living in UK ha ha! What you pay in $ is straight £ most of the time here, exchange rate what's that?

I still can't stand the terrible look of those flight cages. Plus I want a skirt on mine. I also couldn't fit something much larger than about 36" wide where the cage is going in my house. Amazon customers have answered me on the larger 1" spacing one and say they have Jendays in theirs and they are fine. One even stated they have a GCC in theirs and it is fine, yikes! Since my favorite cage is such a large bar spacing I'm still really considering the dome top. 5/8" is a little smaller than 3/4" so I think it's safe to say he'd be alright in this one. I am still so incredibly bothered by exactly what the latch on the door is though. I found a larger photo of it and I'm thinking it MIGHT be the kind that are a lever-type pull latch, the kind that end up hard to pull, squeak eventually, and are easily figured out by smart birds. I can get no answers from the customers on Amazon about any specific info on this dome top, which also bugs me. Someone also stated there are two 1" areas under the door to this one and to be aware of it. All in all I really don't want a "box on a tall stand" I had one before and got rid of it because it was such an eyesore. I just don't understand why companies make cages that are we know are appropriate size for our birds but have bar spacing that isn't! Then they market those cages for bigger birds like Greys and Cockatoos when in reality we all know those are too small for them! The only one of those "non ugly" non breeder cages with 1/2" bar spacing and a skirt I've found are smaller than what he's in already! :56:

Here's the larger photo of the dome top which seems to be a magazine scan: https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/81XHv0IraWL._SL1500_.jpg

Remember, if I take 100 cages with 1 inch spacing and put a GCC in each, how many will I loose? I was one of those stupid dads that left his baby daughter alone in a car for 5 minutes. 25 minutes later, she was still safe! But we have all seen the news when it goes bad! I NEVER did that again!

It seems the play tops are better value?

It is best to take some time and buy right first time, so much easier.

I had this cage for my Quaker then my sun conure, and I thought it was a great cage. It was the one Lucille my RB2 was furious at being imprisoned in at the parents' house while my house (with her giant cage) was exterminated, LOL, but honestly even she fit fairly nicely into it, though I wouldn't keep her there long term. It was nice and roomy, though, and is easy to clean. I really like it--very sturdy and easily moved. One of the wheels broke (they were a bit flimsy), but I just bought a much sturdier set of wheels and easily replaced it--and this thing got rolled around a lot before I slammed it into a wall and broke the wheel. I give it two thumbs up! Definitely worth the money.

EDIT: And what I really like best about it is, even with the skirt on, it fits through a standard door so it can be moved between rooms while put together, unlike my RB2's cage, and can be taken outside to be thoroughly cleaned on the back deck. Or, if your house has to be exterminated multiple times and you have to leave for three full days every time, you can put it in the back of a truck and take it to your parents' house fully assembled! YAY! ;P
