Hey ya'll its been a while sense I have posted! Life with our two feathered friends has been over all GREAT! But recently my son's sun conure has been kinda nippy and super territorial over her stand and cage. I have fostered many many bird in the past but never a conure. "She" (not dna sexed) has been the sweetest most loving bird sense we brought her home about 8 mts ago. She was about 1.5 years old and had been with a well meaning yet wildly uneducated family. Once she settled in she was always wanting to be held and petted and loved on. Even on her most moody conure day she can easily be coaxed with a banana. But lately she has been Jackle and love bird! one moment she is sitting on your shoulder just happy to be close and the next she is trying to rip your ear off! She still LOVES my son (she dances and barks at him when he comes in from school) I am just wondering if this could be "puberty" or if it is behavior I need to be concerned about. Nothing has really changed in her environment and her schedule has stayed generally the same. (I work from home most of the time so both she and our rose breasted are out on there stands most of the time) :orange:

Also she was never really given any raw veg or cooked foods in her previous home (they gave her dog chews as treats) She LOVES bananas and both birds share my grits or oatmeal for breakfast. Can anyone give me any suggestions on foods that your conure likes?

Sunnies reach sexual maturity between 1-3yrs of age- most around 1.5-2yrs.

That being said, birds still get hormonal around mating season and mating season is coming up.

Also, sunnies are know for being territorial. They can get rather protective of things/people and it can lead to jealousy and aggression if not properly dealt with.

You may want to do some research on the issue to see if you can find solutions that may fit your situation. Every situation is different so there is not 'fool proof' method that will work for everyone.

As for foods-

The best fruits/veggies you can give your conure are the 'dark, meaty' ones- that are rich in vitamin A. For fruits, these would be papaya, mango, star fruit. For vegetables, these would be broccoli, carrots, spinach and sweet potato. There are others of course, but these are just a few.

That being said, not all birds will eat those. Skittles won't touch any of the fruits I listed. As for the veggies I mentioned, he'll only eat broccoli and sweet potato.

There are certain fruits/veggies you should avoid. Onions, for example. But especially avocado (its toxic and can be deadly).

If you feed your bird any fruit/veggie that has 'skin' (apples, grapes etc) or is 'porous' (strawberries, broccoli) you want to make sure and wash them thoroughly. With things like grapes and apples, I wash them, peel them and then rinse them before giving any to Skitty. As for the porous ones- like strawberries, I wash them but I also only give him pieces from the center of the strawberry. Another option you could do is feed them organic fruits/veggies if you can find them and afford them.

Thank you Both for the info. We give our birds mostly veg/fruit out of our home garden or from the local grocery. I am very careful about washing/pealing the items. I think her biggest thing with food is that she was never really offered anything but "bird seed blend" (it was a bag of bird seed like you would put in an outside feeder) She is doing great with her zoopream and is getting more daring with other foods.
