I just got my GCC today. He's almost fully weaned, I have to handfeed him once a day if he wants to eat it. When I brought him home, I put him in the cage, and he immediately started climbing the cage walls. The parrot store told me to put all of the perches down low, since he's only a baby, but he won't go down to perch at all. Even when I put the perches up a little higher, he would only start climbing the bars of the cage. He's been hanging off the side for the entire time he's been here, which is about three hours. He has been moving around, but just not perching. Is this normal behavior? I'm afraid that at night he will lose his balance and hurt himself.

It sounds like he is just nervous and on edge. Don't worry, be patient, he will settle in :)

LoL , 3 whole hours, huh? Jeezz, give the little guy a break, he will perch, he is probably perching tonite, it comes pretty naturally to most birds. hint, no perches over or near food or water cups or bowls, so he doesn't poop in them. My last parrot, we had to put the bowls practically on the veiling of his cage, he was a cage bar clinger, too..

Also don't be shocked if he sleeps in really strange bar like positions. GCCs are weird like that :)

Edit: Just woke. He's only gone gone down to eat and climbed back up! I'm less worried now though. Thanks! Does that little bugger's feet ever get tired? :18:

I would move perches up to where he is clinging. Birds naturally seem to prefer the the highest perch. It won't hurt anything because he's not using them where they are now. :)
