Rio (Yellow sided conure) sadly no longer with us
So my Conure Ozzy does some things I'm a bit concerned about (one I find very annoying)

the first is that due to him poking his head places it shouldn't be and kicking wood chips everywhere I have placed a grate in his cage covering the woodchips. He will climb down to the grate, get into a corner then flip over and go across a side on his back whilst trying to get his head through the bars. Is this just him playing or him attempting to get through to the woodchips and the spots he would poke his head in an attempt to escape (or kill himself I'm not entirely sure, either way I'm not letting him do it anymore)

The other thing he will do is climb inside his food bowl and throw his food everywhere. I have his food all the way on the other side of the room he's in constantly and I'm sick and tired of hoovering each day.

Is there any advice I can get here? I never had any of this with my previous conure

Mine picks up his food bowl and throws it to the bottom of his cage. Every single day ... now his bowl sits on the bottom of the cage.. hes done it with his water bowl so i give him an extra large one an elephant can sit in and he struggles now because of the weight.. like u it became tiresome. Hes out of the cage most of the day and has loads to amuse him self with. . But sort of had to adapt to the problem. I think my pineapple conure just thought it was kind of funny to see a human cleaning up after him.. .
I have paper over my grid at the bottom of the cage he doesnt seem to bother getting to the tray underneath..

My Goffin Jonesy would fling his food across the living room..I got one of those "tidy bowl" three sided plexi food bowls..stopped him in his tracks!
Now BB uses it and it cuts down on his mess too ;)

I have 2 conures and I'd say the food tossing is normal (at least in my house it is). I finally resorted to hanging an old bed sheet behind my conures cage to use as a "splash guard" in the area where they fling their chop while eating. It goes into the washing machine every couple of days, and it beats scraping dried fruit and veggies off the wall. The pellets.... well I've just resigned myself to sweeping the discards up every time I walk by :p.

My conure did something similar as a baby. Sounds like play.

Mine did this for a while, then quit. You could try covering the bowl with paper to make it more work to get the food.
