Rico--pineapple Green Cheek Conure, Dmitri RIP (Peach faced lovebird)
Hi,
I have been doing my research for a few months and have decided on getting a GCC. My previous parrot experience was with a peach faced lovebird who was my wonderful companion for 8 years---very well trained and the love of my life (together with husband and adult daughter). I haven't had a dog in over 30 years.

My husband would like to also have a dog at some time. So my question is, which is best to bring into the house first? It seems to me that many parrots become jealous and may act out, so it would be better if the dog was already in the home. Or does it not matter at all if the introductions are handled well?

Thanks.

Angel the blue and gold macaw, mimsy the lesser sulphur too, rocky the galah & willow the blue crowned conure.
i have 3 dogs, who came first, they dont take any notice of the birds and the birds ignore them unless they bark and then they bark too! i'd say dog first, then your new bird will just see him as part of your 'flock'

Maui - Male CAG (my baby) (Mom's babies) KiKi - Sun Conure, Fred & Wilma - Fisher Lovebirds, Gully,Sweetie,Baby - Cockatiels, Mork & Mindy - Zebra Finches Luna,Sky,Jilly - Budgies 16 Gouldian Finches
I brought Maui home at 5 weeks, he almost immediately took to my 5 yr old 100lb German Shepherd, Logan. At 12 weeks, My dog, Logan and My CAG, Maui are the bestest of friends. Maui fly's to Logan's back and preens him and Logan VERY gently will walk around the house, with Maui in tow, Maui just hangssss on and goes along for the ride. LOL. He usually will stay attached to Logan for about 5-10 minutes before flying off to find something to get into.

Sam (GCC)
Gem (CBC)
Merry and Teechka (parakeets)
and non FIDS:
Harvey and Jed (dogs) Jolte and Churney (cats) Twister and Mac (horses) Nikolas and Aleksndr (ducks )
In general ...dog first and preferably past that gangly puppy stage so less likely to hurt bird by accident.

B&G Macaw, African Grey Congos, Timnehs, Brown-necks, Meyers, DYH Amazon... :-)
We have two bird dogs, a terrier mix along with an Australian shepherd cross. Today our African Grey Timneh "Romeo" was riding around on the Weimaraner's back. The dogs don't quite understand why we would waste good treats on the parrots.

The birds know the dogs by name and will often say "good dog!" At other times they will tell them to "be quiet!" in a stern voice, if they start barking. A little crazy at times, but a lot of fun!

My GCC conure loves my great dane he rides around on her back all the time and my dane doesn't mind at all. Now my new chihuahua puppy thinks my gcc is a toy so I have to watch them carefully. I would definately get the puppy first and let it grow past the goofy puppy stage especially if its going to be a medium/larger dog. My chihuahua barely weighs more than my GCC and I still have to keep a good eye on her around the bird.

Not sure if theres a right or wrong answer to this one, though I'd probably prefer to the dog being settled in first, I treat all my fids ( feathered and furry kids alike) as individuals because you never know how they'll interact with each other, as with some other members I guess I'm lucky in the respect that my three dogs and the four indoor birds really don't even give each other a second look :)

We had ou 3 dogs before our birds. However, both Ruby and Jade have made sure that the quadrapeds know who's in charge...
