Rio (Yellow sided conure) sadly no longer with us
So on Friday after getting out of work early I decided to do something crazy!

I ended up sending a message to a parrot breeder in wales! Asking when they think they should have some more Blue throated conures. they told me they often get another clutch around november/december time. I've asked if they let prospective owners come visit before making decisions they said they only reply to their messages every couple days as they're pretty busy feeding all the different babies and looking after the parents. So hopefully providing I work a little overtime the next 2 months I may have a couple short breaks in wales and a new friend!

Luckily they gave me what feels like a truly honest run-down of them. He said that he finds them a little noisier than Green Cheeks due to the chattering method of their call (which I prefer to the sharp sudden screeches) they're about as cuddly as Green cheeks on the whole and they're a little more chilled out although not by much. So nice to get someone just say what it's like to own a bird instead of "they're amazing they cuddle lots" He also gave me a rundown on how Cites works and not to worry too much about it just keep the paper's safe like you would a birth certificate. Let the vet have a copy of it so they can keep it on file for him more just as a back-up if anything happens and to only worry about it if I plan on taking him on holiday

I'm actually starting to get really excited about the prospect of getting one of these Blue Throats. I assure you all that if/when I do get one there will be an influx of pictures and videos!

I know! the pictures of their current babies are so adorable! I love how they look, their head structure is different to other conures I've seen so they look incredibly different, then they have so many different colours. Will be a unique one to take with me to Think Parrots next year!

it's a bird show/convention type thing. Loads of toy and cage suppliers and vets and stuff all meet up for seminars and the like but they allow people to bring their parrots with them. Managed to meet quite a lot last year, was super fun

Very exciting.

I remember my excitement when I finally made the decision to get a parrot. After many years of wanting one & reading everything I could about them. I actually bought an African Grey book 4 years before I got Levi. Haha :D I didn't want to make any mistakes. Enough about me.

Good luck, I can't wait to hear all about your new journey and new baby.

Tami2, this will actually be my second bird,, my first died due to me not realizing an appliance I had contained teflon but that's disposed of now.

LeakP, try and stop me!

Yes, I knew this wasn't going to be your first. However, I didn't realize you had lost your first bird. I'm so sorry.

Yay, exciting or what! Great news.

Think carefully re Think Parrots and Stafford for that matter as you do not know the medical history of the other birds in the room. I'd never take Plum.

Very true. It's something I'll need to think about. Would be nice to take it with me so can meet some other birds and even pick out some toys of their own. I do plan after harness training on letting him come with me to the local petshop to pick out toys too, I vow to become the crazy bird man of my town.

Scott, I know right! It's so unfortunate they're endangered. I've never seen a more striking conure. They're so unique looking.

Triggs!
So glad to hear that you are finally ready to get a new bird, and that you've settled which species to get. It's a hard decision!

You're joining the club, as far as i know we are only me and another member who has this species. They're pretty rare, i was lucky to get this species, as it was the only one i could afford. The breeder knew about their special needs for social and mental stimulation, so he just wanted them to go to a home where those needs could be met. He had two for sale, the first one he sold to me, and the second one was sold to a guy coming all the way from Germany to pick the bird up. I heard there's only approximately 12 breeders in Europe. Much more should start breeding this species as they're becoming more endangered. I really love my tux, this is my first parrot so i can't compare to other species. He just loves hanging out with me, and enjoys training and exercise. I haven't harness trained him yet, but i plan on starting this winter so he is ready to go outside next year. I'm currently building a new cage for him, i'm almost done, been working on it for 40 days. I will post pics in the DIY section to show the final result. Ah! you replied in my post about sleeping cages. So i think i will just use that thread instead, to keep people updated.

If you have any questions, i will gladly try to answer them as best as i can. I've gone through the exact same process as you, as there's not much information on how they're as pets. I think they're the perfect pet parrot, silent, funny personalities, loves to climb things, hang upside down, and bathe. I guess like you would expect a typical conure, i've never owned a conure or seen one in real life, GCC are not that widespread here in Denmark so can't really compare. I prefer saying Blue Throated Parakeet, as the Conurus family no longer exists. But that's irrelavant, same same :)

Good luck Triggs!

Good luck Triggs!

That's good to know there's at least one other blue throat owner here! from yourself, the breeder and other people in different places they can't sing the praises of blue throats enough. Yes only 2 appear to be in the UK. One exclusively breeds breeding parrots to help get the population up living in the north end of the country, the other which I'm going to hand-feeds but still far from me. so going to have to be a weekend away whenever I go up to see them/bring them home.

the noise I find funny, definitely shows the type of noise is important. I much prefer the chattering calls over the screech. Won't fully know the difference but hey if the neighbourhood can deal with Ringnecks literal feet away from the windows then they can deal with a Blue throat in a relatively quiet apartment

thankfully my excitement is only growing. Did some re-arranging and have more than enough room for the cage I have, I'm even contemplating getting a bigger one

Yeah the type of noise is def important, the chattering sounds is becomimg very advanced with my blue throat, almost like he's trying to tell me something, or maybe what i hear is about to develop into baby stage vocalizations, "bab-ba-di-bab, ba-ba-di-bab-ba-bab.." It's so funny to listen to, not annoying at all, again it's in a low level volume he does it. Other than that, he's quiet most of the time, and when i leave for grocery shopping, i start audacity and record while im gone, and he mostly completely silent, i've been experimenting with giving him a pistashio nut every time i leave, so he now has learned that whenever i give him a pistashio nut, i leave for an hour or two, and he knows that calling for me is pointless, because he knows im not there, and i will be back shortly.

How is it all going with getting your new bird? Any progress? :)

nothing yet, The breeder just completely re-built and revamped the area where he keeps all the birds so they're probably a little thrown off right now but he said they usually lay between October/November so hopefully I should hear something in the next few weeks. May be December they lay just due to the new digs throwing them off.

Thankfully any and all chemicals from recent roach removal should be long gone by then. Of course I still have those worries of time and what-not, being in my mid-twenties now (Can't even say early twenties anymore!!!!) you never know what you're doing week to week. This upcoming month and previous couple weeks have been very busy, but saying that there's always been at least a bit of time I can hang around with them, I know my weekday schedule more than the weekends!

I'm going to have to evaluate if I can afford one as our payment system at work is changing to salary so I need to see how I fair with that before I make a final decision
