Just happy and wanted to share

I havent been here that long as a member and many of you do not know me, but I do know almost everyone of you can relate. Do you ever wonder what your "non bird/family" people think of you? My DH is not a bird person, but he supports my love for all animals. Every once in awhile I will catch him watching me having a conversation with one of the FIDS and I just laugh because I can imagine the things going through his head. Then, I wonder also if my non bird friends think the same? If I'm raving about something new one of them did, occasionally from a friend I'll hear the, "jo, it's just a bird"...they dont get it! Am I that crazy woman who talks to her animals and spoils them rotten like their her kids? (I know I'm not the only one thanks to this forum) but I think that's how they see me (not that I care lol). Things have been going so well here with Amos & Panini, theyre getting along wonderfully! I know it will be quite some time, but I think there is a bond forming between Amos and myself (wishful thinking, IDK maybe, but I'll take it). It is truly amazing to see each little step Amos takes at becoming more trusting with me. He has always let me handle him, never has bitten or shown unfavorable behaviors... so it's not like I had a whole ordeal of issues to work with, it was and is more of the little things, yes he lets me hold him, but you can tell when he is 100% relaxed with me, or the way he lets me touch under his wings more each time.
anyways, dont want to write a book, just wanted to express my extreme pleasure I've had with my FIDS. I know there will be ups and downs, but right now were in the up area and not everyone I know personally can appreciate those moments with me.

Yes, I can relate. I'm not sure what it is about birds but people do tend to think you're a little "different".....
Many people think I'm crazy because I'm retired and should now be "free"...Free for what, I'd like to know. I am free to do what I like to do, and birds seem to be it! LOL! It is irritating but I try not to let it bother me. Actually, I prefer my birds to many people that I know!

Re: Just happy and wanted to share

I know exactly what you mean. I can read people fairly well and I can see when they're just not getting what I'm saying. They don't even have to say it, I can see them going "Geez, it's just a freakin' bird, get over it."

Honestly, there are millions of humans out there. They're not particularly special. Pick the ones that are open minded enough to at least appreciate the joy you feel in something, even if they don't get it themselves and ignore the others.

Do I sometimes feel like 'that crazy bird guy'? Yeah. Do I care? In all honesty, maybe for a split second... Then I realize there are far, far worse things to be seen as.

The people who mind, usually don't matter, and those who matter usually don't mind.

Re: Just happy and wanted to share

I know exactly how you feel.

People tend to want to hear what the dogs have been up to. Of course, I love them just as much as Cal and they are very intelligent with the array of tricks and "manners" I have taught them. People ask so many questions about them and if they can fuss them etc etc.

Cal gets: Can it talk?

ho hum!

As I think I may have mentioned in "you know you're a parront when....", I find your facebook status' are of no consequence, you bang on and on about your bird to family that ring and they end up saying: uhuh....so how is Dave? You know...your husband? That bloke?

A lot of people look in Cal's cage and can't understand why there is a bowl of veg or fruit, why "it would need a bed"(What's that muff thing for??) or "all them toys". They think I'm mental for "spoiling" her.

I think they're mental for being in the mind set that if you have any type of pet that "enough is enough" with the things you buy/make for them!

I'm so happy you're happy, it is a magical time indeed and don't let anyone tell you different!

Re: Just happy and wanted to share

Thanks everyone ... I knew most of you could relate! I'm very blessed to have the chance to share my life with these little creatures and even happier to know I'm not alone with my feelings.

forgot and had to edit this...

I just recently added a short bit to my facebook page about my animals/family..I take a lot of pictures, update my status throughout the day with FID info, and finally felt the need to express to my friends if this was a bother to them to simply delete my page (no hard feelings) ... they are a huge part of my life, and I figure it's all a package deal ya know lol!

I know what you mean. When I talk about getting a parrot people always ask "why?" And if I try to explain it, they just don't seem to understand. When I had pet rats it was the same. Everyone was disgusted/surprised/confused by the fact that I had rats.

When people see me coming with Rosie on my shoulder they say "Here comes that crazy woman with her bird". This may be where the saying comes from Birds of a Feather!

Re: Just happy and wanted to share

The funny thing is that my family, who thought I was crazy for getting all these birds, have spent time here...and have fallen in love with them. My mom and sister always ask, " How are the birds? What's Fred been up to?" My sister is now expressing interest in getting a bird! LOL!

My son had started with one pet rat. It took me a little bit to get used to the idea, and then, I fell in love with the darn thing. I researched the heck out of the small mammals for kids and they fitted what we wanted. We ended up getting another one from a breeder, and ended up with a few more after a local pet store was over breeding their hairless, she was missing part of her eye also. So, we brought her home with her babies, found a rescue for her locally and I found homes for the little ones. My sons rat lived almost two years before tumors were everywhere. It was a learning experience but there will a spot in my heart forever for our little Blossom. I do have to say...many more ppl have rat phobias than bird phobias lol!

Sharon I have family and friends who are the same way...some are more interested than others though

...and Spiritbird, where do you take Rosie with you when you go out? Do you keep her in a travel cage for the car and use a harness or does she stay right with you?
