Hi everyone,
New to the site purely because my 18month old Sun conure, Crayola, had an incident. She sleeps in a hammock and shes chewed the bottom to make a pocket for herself to sleep in. As she kept chewing shes gotten string around her neck and twisted and got stuck. She would have been in there since last night. Shes been in a psycho mood with me for the past few weeks and I assumed she just didnt want to get out. So today when I arrived home from work she hadnt moved and looked v tired. I tried getting her out but she was frantic and stuck so I cut her out straight away but string was still around her neck, i got it off. Shes purple around the eyes and lethargic. Ive managed to feed her some water and shes eaten. Currently cuddling with me in bed. She still has strength and can hold on and walk but im still worried about what might happen tonight. When i got her free she cuddled my neck and I was rubbing her with my cheek and she was doing it back. I hope she knows im tryna help her:orange:

Hi and welcome, we are happy to have you here :)

I think you should make an appointment with your avian vet ASAP! Even if you got the string off, she might have been injured by this ordeal. I am so sorry to hear this, and I hope she gets better soon.

don't make an appointment, GO NOW! Many parrots can die hours after getting their neck caught and from the sound of it she was oxygen starved for a while and she will have the fabric in her crop! She is currently dying and needs a vet

Then when the all clear is given burn that hut and never use one again

Crossing fingers year baby is ok. Luckily due to the bone structure in there necks and routing of veins and arteries strangulation is less likely. Sounds like exhaustion and severe stress.
Do get to the vet asap... and keep birdie warm and as calm as possible. I don't want to imagine what that birdie went through.

Sorry to hear about Cayola's near death experience and lucky you were there to cut her out. She was probably choking for a while on that string. She really does need to see an avian vet as it sounds like she is not out of the woods yet on this. Throw that sleep hut AWAY and never use it again. Happy huts kill many birds each year.

Thanks everyone for your advic. Shen I freed her the hut immediately went and my Quaker didnt like that at all. I ended up making a sling with a tea towel and they both snuggled in that last night. Crayola fed fine on seed and frozen berries last night with loads if water and slept well. I checked on her throughout the night and she was snoring the poor love. She was defs exhausted. This morning shes been fine playing with Petrie and grooming, shes eating and resting

a near disaster! if she had been stuck in there longer it would've definitely killed her. Another example of why they shouldn't sell those things anymore. I'm so glad she seems to be okay now. wheew.

Those F...ing huts and hammocks are death traps, if they dont die from ingesting the material, the poor babies get strangulated. A close call and you are one lucky parront.

It's horrifying to see all those huts, tents, cozy corners, and hammocks sold at almost every pet store I go to. Let's see who's "happy" with that hut once your bird is dead? Throw that thing away and never let your baby go anywhere near it again. I'm glad she's okay, though.

you still need to go to the vet immediately

put simple where did the fabric go from the hole she chewed? Answer, her crop where it easily impacts and slowly starves her. She really needs to get to a vet immediately

Relieved lil birdie survived the initial horror of that death trap. Do consider a vet visit. Stress like that can have after effects.

I just rang an avian vet. Told them everything and they arent too concerned atm because shes improving. I only need to take her in when shes deteriorating and vomiting. She doesnt appear to of eaten string/fluff because when she chews things all the fluff goes to the bottom of the cage.

Appreciate the update... I was worried about the lil one. Still keep an eye out. Stress can do bizzare things to their immune systems that can manifest later.

How is your bird feeling now? I worry she could have received an anoxic brain injury for possible hanging.

Good point Sandra. Luckily by design birdie necks are very strong and unlike us upper mammals their large arteries and veins going to their brains is actually within the bone structure, hence strangulation is less likely than one might think. Amazing design ain't it!

Shes definitely a lot better. Eating heaps and playing heaps with her friend. Shes bathing and talking to wild birds, she was even brave enough to leave her cage by herself and come find me for a cuddle.
