I have a friend who is giving me their conure I am not to sure the type she said it is a High red yellow sided green cheek conure but I am not to sure! I was wondering what is the best diet for them to be on I think they need some fresh fruits and veggies daily but looking for a good quality feed to put him on here is a pic of him! hopefully I added the picture correctly! I have already ordered him a new cage and will be picking him up this Saturday! any help would be great!

The Rickeybird, 38-year-old Patagonian Conure
Harrison's Bird Foods
I feed Harrison's, supplemented by fresh healthy treats. My first, and later, my current avian vet recommended it. My bird loves the pellets now, but to get him converted, my avian vet suggested putting pellets out all day, and putting seeds (his old diet) out for two 15-minute periods a day. That would sustain him but leave him hungry enough to try new stuff. I presume the same technique could be used to get him to eat other healthy stuff. My guy was eating pellets in a couple of days, and now I can feed a good variety of other stuff, knowing he has the pellets as a basic. Pellets are out all day... fresh treats a few times a day. I also like Harrison's via mail because I never have to worry about out-of-date products. :)

Also, do get an avian vet "in the wings" for well-brd check and help as time goes by!

Congratulations.

Stick with us!

Folks, what kind of bird is this? Green Cheek?

Buy a bag off pellets, introduce those with veggies and fruit. don't leave the vegs and fruit out to much it will grow bacteria or flies etc. also wait you were joining today asking about....

was this in the works or you read and were like...OMG im totally doing this....?

realize this is a 30 year commitment...

I mean I love it just make sure you can handle the commitment. Im' all about that bird...bout that bird no trouble all about that bird about that bird no trouble...

Also a "high red" yellow sided GCC has a breast that is basically all red...like abs, boobs, pecs, all red. then a yellow band before the wings......looks kind of like a standard GCC to me but the pic doesn't show the front.

This has been in the works for a while just recently got permission from my wife lol! but I did not expect to find one so fast so I have already ordered a new cage bc the cage he is in now the enamel is chipping and I feel better if I just go ahead and get him fixed up to a environment that is healthier and safer for him looking into toys right now and feed!

I have thought about it...and there is no downside to a gcc......it's a good get.....my only weird vibe is you just came on but then again I got my gcc a year before I came on so I'm not one to judge...just go through the conure forum...read up...you will be suprised how smart these little dinosaurs are.....

Find out what he is eating now, because a diet change can take some time. They will starve before accepting a strange food all of the sudden.

Yoda, Green Cheek Conure - Trigger, Congo African Grey
Welcome to Conure-love!! :D

First, my disclaimer: I have only one bird, a green cheek conure, and I'm in love. I think he is absolutely the greatest possible companion I could have chosen (except for my husband) and I'll take any and every opportunity to share this joy with anyone who will listen. My Yoda is an Ultra-high red yellow side Green Cheek Conure. Actual species is "Pyrrhura Conure" which generally speaking is the smaller, quieter of the two major conure types. Green Cheek is a type of Pyrrhura Conure that typically has some red on the belly and green cheeks (duh). Yellow-side means the bird has more yellow on it's breast area, high red means more red that may extend up the chest and maybe some on the head. Your picture looks like a Yellow-side Green Cheek conure, but I can't see how much red is on the belly. Not that all that really matters. To be honest I didn't choose Yoda because of his gorgeous colors, HE chose ME and convinced me that I can't live without him. The color is just a bonus bit of eye-candy. :)

I can't say enough good things about having a Conure (Green cheek especially, not as screamy as the Sun Conures). No problems with allergies, no fleas, no furballs, no pet hair everywhere, minimal mess, easy to care for, and MORE LOVE and cuddle and affection than you can handle. In short, pure joy. :)

Food: My best advice for food is to give him pellets. If he has never eaten pellets he may take some time to transition to them, feed him whatever he has been eating so far, mix in pellets and slowly give him more pellets and less of the whatever he had before every day, until he is eating the pellets without issue. Once you've got him eating the pellets, it may be hard to change to a different brand. My research showed that Top's, Harrison, Zupreem (natural), Roudybush and Hari Tropican are all good. Avoid any with artificial colors, and store it in the freezer to keep it fresh. Add some fresh veggies and fruit, easiest way is to buy some frozen veggies, but fresh is better. I just mince some of whatever I am eating and add it to Yoda's dish of Tropican pellets. He loves carrots. Mine doesn't care much for fruits, except for papaya bits as treats. Don't overdo it on the fruit though, veggies are better for him.

Other then that, just get ready to learn to do everything with one hand, your Conure will claim the other as his permanent property. :)

ty squeeks i will def not change the diet right off i will add slowly to his food and try to wean him off his current diet but i just want to make sure that i have a happy bird! What is weird is my big cage will not come in until Monday so i purchased the biggest cage at my LPS for a temp solution so he does not have to be in the chipped cage he is in now and will also give me enough time to put all his toys in his cage do you have any suggestions of what kind of things i could put in his cage!

When I first got Yoda, I read that it was good to have an assortment of toys for different purposes; Chewing Toy (something with wood that he can destroy), Exercise Toy (Swings and ladders), Preening toy (something with rope tassels/cloth), Puzzle toy (something he has to figure out, like extracting sticks or treats from a basket or bucket). Better yet, get him a couple of each of these types and then rotate them in his cage, so every week he has two "new" toys to replace the ones he detroyed or got bored with. Yoda likes all of the toys I got for him, but his favorites are the 'portable' toys like little cat-toy balls, pen caps, and anything that lets him play while being with me. Funny thing is, he seems to like the less expensive toys more than the complicated, large, fancy toys.

Couldn’t agree more with you!!! [emoji172][emoji172][emoji172]

Congrats on your new addition!!! He/she will be the new reason you get up in the morning, the excitement to come home, and maybe the reason you no longer want to leave the house! [emoji12] I’m not kidding either! My husband and kids come second [emoji23]

I agree with everyone’s suggestions on the food, introduce the pellets slowly. Also a small amount of fresh veggies and fruit. I do it every morning with 70% veggies 30% fruit. My Nibbles is a great eater so he eats everything I give him, but most birds are very picky so don’t be discouraged.

The first week will be the adjusting period and I’ve heard many bird people claim that it’s best NOT to handle at all. To just sit by their cage and chat with them. I tried this but broke after a few days, I couldn’t go without giving him some head scratches!! But I still limited handling him, he adjusted really well because of this.

Rio (Yellow sided conure) sadly no longer with us
for a couple weeks at first I would stick with the food he already eats, the stress of moving and the stress of a diet change is a lot for a conure, let him settle and become comfy then transition to the new food. Though there's nothing wrong in offering some pellets for him to try out alongside the normal meals
