Green cheek conure - Sydney (Syd) Hatched 2/2017
When Syd and I first shacked up together he played every trick in the book at bedtime to delay the moment when he succumbed to sleep. I thought I had cracked it when I got him a sleep cage in the spare room. 7.30pm is the golden moment when peace reigns once again in the house.....until the last few nights!

The latest delaying tactic is to have a bath at 7.15pm! Now I am reluctant to put him to bed all wet and possibly cold and he loves to put himself at the back of my neck and tuck his head into my hair until he's dry which can be 30 mins or more. So once again Paront is on the back foot and he is leading me a dance. Tomorrow I'll be ready for him! ;)

That's too funny! My Yoda does the same thing... we try to say good night to him and he needs to stretch first, then he dives onto my shoulder and tries hiding in my hair behind my neck, then he tries doing every trick he knows (dangling, turning circles, waving), it's as if he is saying "I'm too cute! You can't put me in my cage, you should cuddle me and play with me all night instead!"

1 BFA- Kiwi. Hatch circa 98', forever home with us Dec. 08'
Not much advice here. Kiwi is the kind of bird who, if a human neglects to notice birdie bedtime, will go in his cage, close the door behind himself and make it known his highness is ready for the covers to go on, thank you very much:p

Blue Fronted Amazon, Cookie..Sun Conure..lil Booger (RIP) Have owned Parakeets, lovebirds, cockatiels, cockatoos, pocket parrot, and quakers.
Ha! Not a bit surprised. Little critters are very smart. My lil Booger would tell me when he wanted to get put to bed. On the bath thing tho... he really enjoyed getting blow dried with a hair dryer. Once I would get him dry he would jump back in his water bowl to start the process all over again!

for me clark lets ME know when it's bed time, and I have to go with him. He starts sqeeking until I'm like fine ok lets go sleepy. If I'm lucky he nods off quick and I can sneak out of bed and go back downstairs, but sometimes I have to listen to him practice his english for a while....

Levi - 6 yr old CAG

DOH-4/2/2016
Iā€™m no help either, sorry.
Levi, lets me know itā€™s bedtime as well. He doesnā€™t say it yet, but Iā€™m waiting for it. He gets antsy moving from one to hand to the other and wonā€™t settle. Than I say okay bedtime and he shakes his tail and gives me kisses. Than we say good night to my son & hubby. When I bring him over to my hubby, Levi says, ā€˜Good night Leviā€™ sometimes before my husband says it, than he gives hubby a kiss. Heā€™s happy to get into his cage. I change his water and he calls to me to cover him. Once heā€™s covered he settles right down.
We started that routine early on and heā€™s good with it.

I see some ppl have a ā€˜sleep cageā€™ what exactly is that? A separate cage only to sleep or is it a special cage designed for promoting sleep?

Thx

great thread...I have to turn the lights off, with the only light coming from the TV...Coco will then get very close to me, like climb onto my chest and will let me pick her up..at which point I can get up and put her in her cage...she usually nips me a bit on the short walk over to the cage since she doesn't actually want to go into her cage to sleep. But once she is in there, she gets into her sleeping hut quickly and that's the last I hear from her except for maybe some contented beak clicking. I make sure there is adequate light for a minute so she can actually see where she's going as she makes her way to the sleep hut.

Do you think there is any chance that Syd knows I report on him? Today he has been so cantankerous. He is usually sweet with the odd nip if something worries him but today he has let me know he doesn't love me at all. He is usually very happy on my shoulder while I do chores around the house, but not today. All he wanted was for me to sit still and chat. It wasn't going to happen.

It's like living with my kids when they were teenagers again! When he's like this I use a perch to step up and put him away from me, not on the floor because the dog's feet are as big as him. He waltzes back with short little flights until he reaches me as if butter wouldn't melt and then attacks again.

The relationship I think I have with him is obviously a mirage. He went to bed early tonight - no chance for a bath! Tomorrow is another day (sigh)! Fingers crossed he will have sweetened up.
